Back then, when I had a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eipper_Quicksilver\"><strong>Quicksilver MX<\/strong><\/a>, I made a flight over <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">new snow<\/span> in the area <strong>Northeast<\/strong> of <strong>Wichita<\/strong>. I have always <strong>treasured<\/strong> that hour in the air and the <strong>grand view<\/strong> it provided. It was <strong>early enough<\/strong> in the morning that most of the <strong>streets<\/strong> were still <strong>snow covered<\/strong>. The <strong>visual impression<\/strong> was that of <strong>Kansas<\/strong> in the <strong>1870&#8217;s<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>smoke<\/strong> from chimneys <strong>here and there<\/strong> but no cars out and <strong>no<\/strong><em> (visible)<\/em> <strong>streets<\/strong>. I wandered about in the brisk air until it occurred to me there was <strong>no feeling<\/strong> in my right hand. Since that is the <em>&#8220;control stick hand&#8221;<\/em> for a <strong>Quicksilver<\/strong>, it seemed like a good time to turn back. The hand performed adequately and landing was uneventful.<\/p>\n<p>Back now in <strong>2014<\/strong>, in addition to the <strong>exceptional snow fall<\/strong>, <strong>temperatures<\/strong> have dropped as low as <strong>Zero<\/strong>\u00a0this week &#8211; unusual for <strong>Wichita<\/strong>. I know my <strong>Canadian Friend Dave O&#8217;Malley<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/aerographics.on.ca\/\">Aerographics Creative Services<\/a> &#8211; is probably up <strong>in<\/strong> <strong>Ottawa<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>sunbathing<\/strong>\u00a0but, as for me, snow is not my favorite thing. <em>On the other hand<\/em>, I love grand gestures&#8230;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fitzvideo.com\/skysurfing2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_5493.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fitzvideo.com\/skysurfing2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_5493.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.airnav.com\/airport\/35KS\"><strong>Selby Airstrip<\/strong><\/a> Looking South &#8211; Note The Flocks Of Geese<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>&#8220;Follow Through&#8221; Is Important In Golf And Sky Surfing<\/h4>\n<p>This <strong>January<\/strong>, I posted<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em>(in excruciating detail)<\/em><strong>\u00a0a\u00a0<\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/fitzvideo.com\/skysurfing2\/2014\/01\/05\/improvement-or-obsession-by-brian-fitzgerald\/\">wind faring project<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that I<strong> built <\/strong>and<strong> installed <\/strong>on my<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.quicksilveraircraft.com\/\"><strong>Quicksilver<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong>While <strong>considering<\/strong> the design, and even more so <strong>after<\/strong> <strong>finishing it<\/strong>, I knew it would require <strong>the acid test of actually flying in cold weather<\/strong>. I doubt if anybody else cared if I ever did &#8220;fly the fairing&#8221; but personally I had to &#8220;close the loop&#8221;. I suppose I could have done this in <strong>40 degree temps<\/strong> but, would that impress <strong>the Inner Surfer<\/strong>? Would that inspire the one who envisions himself\u00a0<em>&#8220;Hanging 10&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0into the beach at <a href=\"http:\/\/visitmolokai.com\/beaches.php\">Molokai<\/a>? The one who\u00a0<em>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.surfoutlet.com\/guides\/how-to-tube-ride-in-surfing\">rides the tube<\/a>&#8220;<\/em> with impunity? <strong>Of course not<\/strong>. <strong>The Surfer needs a Challenge<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<h4>Missed Opportunity<\/h4>\n<p>In <strong>January<\/strong> and <strong>February<\/strong> good <strong>quantities <\/strong>of snow manifested across the area. After these snow falls, flight was not propitious. Either the <strong>wind<\/strong> was <strong>too high<\/strong>, the <strong>snow<\/strong> too deep or the temperature had warmed too quickly and the field had turned to slush. I don&#8217;t take off in slush because my main landing gear throw it up on the wings and into the prop. The <strong>potential<\/strong> for a <strong>ruined propeller<\/strong> makes the endeavor not worthwhile.<\/p>\n<p>I had one <strong>window of opportunity<\/strong>. In Feb, it snowed with a <strong>hard blowing wind<\/strong>. When it died down, I went to the airport to survey the situation. The <strong>field surface<\/strong> showed potential but <strong>visibility<\/strong> was only a <strong>mile<\/strong> and the air was quite <strong>humid<\/strong>. I decided to wait another day or so for a better moment. This proved to be a mistake as soon thereafter, the sun beat down so hard it seemed like Spring was starting early. For about a week or so I was disappointed with myself for not taking that &#8220;last&#8221; <em>Snow Covered, Winter Flight Opportunity<\/em> &#8211; Possibly the last one around here for Decades! That changed last weekend. <strong>Temperatures dropped<\/strong> dramatically along with a good quantity of snow. The <strong>high wind stopped<\/strong> on Monday the 3rd of March, the sky was clear and I knew it was time to act.<\/p>\n<h4>Stage 3 Winter Attire<\/h4>\n<p><strong>The first picture<\/strong> in this report\u00a0was taken <strong>just after I arrived<\/strong> at the field <strong>before<\/strong> <strong>opening<\/strong> the <strong>hangar<\/strong>. I had brought my <em>&#8220;wind proof&#8221;<\/em> <strong>snow suit<\/strong>, <strong>flight jacket<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>electric gloves<\/strong>, two sets of <strong>neck gaiters<\/strong>, warm <strong>boots<\/strong> and <strong>helmet<\/strong>. The only missing <em>&#8220;Stage 3&#8221;<\/em> element was <strong>long underwear<\/strong>. They were not missed. The ambient air temperature was <strong>15 degrees<\/strong> when I arrived with about a <strong>5 mph surface wind<\/strong> from the <strong>South<\/strong>. It was cold enough that my uncovered hands lost feeling while I <strong>pre-flighted the plane<\/strong> and took\u00a0<strong>pictures<\/strong>. When finally <strong>airborne<\/strong>, I am happy to say<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>my <strong>experimental<\/strong> <strong>wind fairing<\/strong> did its job. I was quite comfortable. My face <strong>mask<\/strong> <strong>fogged<\/strong> up a few times and had to be cleared but that was the <strong>only physical indication<\/strong> of how cold it was.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fitzvideo.com\/skysurfing2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_5502.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/fitzvideo.com\/skysurfing2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_5502.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The <strong>MXL<\/strong> peeks tentatively outside its hangar <em>(note the &#8220;S Curve&#8221; of geese over the hangar in the distance)<\/em>.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Pre-Flight &amp; Suit Up<\/h4>\n<p>I <strong>opened<\/strong> the hangar and pulled my plane to the opening where the <strong>light<\/strong> was <strong>better<\/strong>. Naturally I was thinking <em>&#8220;photo op&#8221;<\/em> and took a few pix. Geese from all around the region use the lake on the <strong>Southwest<\/strong> part of the <strong>Selby property<\/strong> to congregate. If a <strong>suitable group<\/strong> presents itself, I&#8217;ll dial my engine back to <strong>minimum flight speed<\/strong> and pull in just far enough behind them that they start <strong>looking over their shoulders<\/strong> at me. The flock will bank left to try to lose me and I will swing farther left and shift them to the right, etc. Sometimes I can turn them\u00a0<strong>180 degrees<\/strong>. Even though they have to do\u00a0<em>&#8220;reader&#8221;<\/em> stories with a still photo or graphic next to the <strong>anchor&#8217;s shoulder<\/strong>, news producers avoid those segments like the plague. \u00a0<em>Whether it is shakey<\/em>, <em>out of focus or missing sound<\/em> &#8211; <strong>any video<\/strong> is preferable to a slide or graphic. This can help you understand why you frequently see &#8220;lame&#8221; news stories on TV that <strong>don&#8217;t seem to have any relevance<\/strong> to your town or even your area of the country. They run these stories only because the <strong>video was compelling<\/strong> in some way to the producers &#8211; NOT because the story necessarily had much intrinsic value. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ImaH51F4HBw\">McLuhan: &#8220;The medium is the message\/massage&#8221;<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>They <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">are<\/span> caught on the <strong>horns of a dilemma<\/strong>, though. For example, TV audiences will watch a &#8220;news story&#8221; consisting of\u00a0<strong>cute pictures<\/strong> of someone&#8217;s dog doing wacky tricks by a <strong>large margin<\/strong> over a <em>&#8220;talking head&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0economist explaining how government induced inflation is sapping your buying power and savings. The <strong>economist<\/strong>\u00a0supplying information VITAL TO YOUR LIFE will be <strong>ignored<\/strong> <strong>by<\/strong> a vast majority of the TV <strong>audience<\/strong> simply because he is not <em>balancing one-legged on a beach ball while juggling his calculators<\/em>. He is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not entertaining<\/span> &#8211; <strong>the puppy is<\/strong> &#8211; so no one cares what <strong>Professor I. M. Numbers<\/strong> has to say. So, to get the all important ratings necessary to engender advertising support &#8211; <strong>Run The Puppy!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In similar ways,<strong> The Sky Surfer<\/strong> plays between the <strong>same goalposts<\/strong>. A flight in sub-freezing temperatures has the same intrinsic value <strong>with or without pictures<\/strong>. But <strong>without pictures nobody cares<\/strong> and&#8230; they may not <em>believe<\/em>. There are a few <strong>Sky Surfer Dudes<\/strong> and <a href=\"http:\/\/rippinh2o.com\/dropzone\/surflingo.shtml\" data-wplink-edit=\"true\"><strong>Dudettes<\/strong><\/a> that read his <strong>sparkling prose<\/strong> but most just scan a few of <strong>The Flite Blog\u2122<\/strong> pictures. Therefore additional effort is always expended to put\u00a0<strong>The Surfer<\/strong> in the scene to &#8220;validate&#8221; the story&#8230;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9876\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fitzvideo.com\/skysurfing2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_5509_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9876\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9876\" src=\"http:\/\/fitzvideo.com\/skysurfing2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_5509_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"582\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fitzvideo.com\/skysurfing2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_5509_2.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.fitzvideo.com\/skysurfing2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_5509_2-300x136.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.fitzvideo.com\/skysurfing2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_5509_2-640x291.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9876\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">While staging this picture, <strong>The Sky Surfer<\/strong>\u00a0thinks he exudes the same &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/joie+de+vivre\">joie de vivre<\/a>&#8221; evidenced by <strong>Wiley Post<\/strong>\u00a0when holding his <em>&#8220;space suit helmet&#8221;<\/em> in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wiley_Post\">the famous picture<\/a> taken with\u00a0<em>&#8220;Winnie Mae&#8221;<\/em> before climbing into the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/stratosphere\"><strong>Stratosphere<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Pass Go And Collect<\/h4>\n<p>When I was young, the game <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monopoly_(game)\">Monopoly<\/a> was quite popular. When you passed <em>&#8220;Go&#8221;<\/em> on the game board you would collect a salary. <em>&#8220;Pass Go And Collect&#8221;<\/em> entered the lexicon with a variety of connotations. For one group, <strong>it was a term of derision<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>My <strong>Dad<\/strong>, who was a <strong>fighter pilot<\/strong>, used that term to describe <strong>an ignoble practice<\/strong> happening during <strong>The Viet Nam War<\/strong>. As a young man, I <strong>overheard<\/strong> him discuss with his friends once how <strong>certain<\/strong> <em>&#8220;desk jockeys&#8221;<\/em> would arrange flights in C-130&#8217;s over a <strong>combat zone<\/strong> in order to obtain <strong>combat pay<\/strong> they did not actually deserve. To do this was to <em>&#8220;Pass Go And Collect&#8221;<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>While fooling around taking of the shot above,\u00a0<strong>my<\/strong> <strong>hands lost their feeling<\/strong>, I was concerned I might have to <em>&#8220;Pass Go And Collect&#8221;<\/em>. Because of the cold, I thought I might have to take off, quickly snap a few pix, land and go home. This story wasn&#8217;t worth frostbite. I am happy to report <strong>that did not happen<\/strong>. The <strong>wind<\/strong> was from that direction <em>(South)<\/em> but I elected not to take off that way because of the <strong>gathering congregation<\/strong>. <strong>Geese<\/strong> always <strong>avoid<\/strong> the big, <strong>noisy yellow bird<\/strong> when I am airborne. Unfortunately they are <strong>not too smart<\/strong>. I knew a large <strong>flock<\/strong> could easily <strong>panic<\/strong> and <strong>flail<\/strong> in all directions. <strong>Striking a large bird<\/strong> is the bane of <strong>any<\/strong> size <strong>airplane<\/strong>. I elected to take off downwind to the <strong>North<\/strong>. That and the snow obstructing my tires caused my <strong>takeoff roll<\/strong> to be <strong>somewhat longer<\/strong> than usual. It uses\u00a0<strong>AA&#8217;s<\/strong> and I keep <strong>extras<\/strong> in my pocket if they go dead on a mission. This flight taught me about their <strong>inability to withstand the cold<\/strong>, though. Even after switching to an <strong>backup,<\/strong> new set of batteries, the camera kept <strong>shutting down<\/strong> warning me to <em>&#8220;replace batteries&#8221;<\/em>. In the old days, this was a known issue with <strong>NiCad batteries<\/strong>. They could not produce a charge in the cold. When we shot video in the winter, the <em>standard operating procedure<\/em> was to keep <strong>NiCads<\/strong> inside your jacket against your body keeping them warm. As soon as one got too cold and failed you would switch it with a &#8220;warm&#8221; one. Until &#8220;The Winter Challenge&#8221; flight, I did not realize regular <strong>dry cells have the same problem<\/strong>. For most of the passes I had the <strong>MXL<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>shadow<\/strong> much <strong>closer<\/strong> and much <strong>bigger<\/strong> but the camera would <strong>shut down<\/strong> just as I was snapping the picture. I also saw a really nice <em>&#8220;MXL shadow in a hedgerow&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0photo op. It is one of the <strong>keys<\/strong> to the <strong>great<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>performance<\/strong> of this plane. My\u00a0<strong>Standard Operating Procedure<\/strong> is to <strong>clean the prop<\/strong> after every flight. Years ago I chose <strong>windshield wiper fluid<\/strong> as my prop cleaner. It was <strong>cold enough<\/strong> that as soon as I spread the <strong>wiper fluid<\/strong> across the prop with my rag, it would <strong>freeze<\/strong>. I&#8217;ll be getting out more <strong>during the cold<\/strong> but mostly look forward for the arrival of\u00a0<em>&#8220;T-Shirt Weather&#8221;<\/em>!
