Frozen Surf<\/h4>\n

In the “rose colored memory”<\/em> <\/span>of The Sky Surfer, it has been the 1980’s<\/strong> since we have had as much snow in Kansas <\/strong>as we are experiencing this Winter<\/strong>. Back then, when I had a Quicksilver MX<\/strong><\/a>, I made a flight over new snow<\/span> in the area Northeast<\/strong> of Wichita<\/strong>. I have always treasured<\/strong> that hour in the air and the grand view<\/strong> it provided. It was early enough<\/strong> in the morning that most of the streets<\/strong> were still snow covered<\/strong>. The visual impression<\/strong> was that of Kansas<\/strong> in the 1870’s<\/strong> – smoke<\/strong> from chimneys here and there<\/strong> but no cars out and no<\/strong> (visible)<\/em> streets<\/strong>. I wandered about in the brisk air until it occurred to me there was no feeling<\/strong> in my right hand. Since that is the “control stick hand”<\/em> for a Quicksilver<\/strong>, it seemed like a good time to turn back. The hand performed adequately and landing was uneventful.<\/p>\n

Back now in 2014<\/strong>, in addition to the exceptional snow fall<\/strong>, temperatures<\/strong> have dropped as low as Zero<\/strong>\u00a0this week – unusual for Wichita<\/strong>. I know my Canadian Friend Dave O’Malley<\/strong>\u00a0– Aerographics Creative Services<\/a> – is probably up in<\/strong> Ottawa<\/strong>\u00a0sunbathing<\/strong>\u00a0but, as for me, snow is not my favorite thing. On the other hand<\/em>, I love grand gestures…<\/p>\n

“Follow Through” Is Important In Golf And Sky Surfing<\/h4>\n

This January<\/strong>, I posted\u00a0<\/strong>(in excruciating detail)<\/em>\u00a0a\u00a0<\/strong>wind faring project<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that I built <\/strong>and installed <\/strong>on my\u00a0Quicksilver<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong>While considering<\/strong> the design, and even more so after<\/strong> finishing it<\/strong>, I knew it would require the acid test of actually flying in cold weather<\/strong>. I doubt if anybody else cared if I ever did “fly the fairing” but personally I had to “close the loop”. I suppose I could have done this in 40 degree temps<\/strong> but, would that impress the Inner Surfer<\/strong>? Would that inspire the one who envisions himself\u00a0“Hanging 10”<\/em>\u00a0into the beach at Molokai<\/a>? The one who\u00a0“rides the tube<\/a>“<\/em> with impunity? Of course not<\/strong>. The Surfer needs a Challenge<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

Missed Opportunity<\/h4>\n

In January<\/strong> and February<\/strong> good quantities <\/strong>of snow manifested across the area. After these snow falls, flight was not propitious. Either the wind<\/strong> was too high<\/strong>, the snow<\/strong> too deep or the temperature had warmed too quickly and the field had turned to slush. I don’t take off in slush because my main landing gear throw it up on the wings and into the prop. The potential<\/strong> for a ruined propeller<\/strong> makes the endeavor not worthwhile.<\/p>\n

I had one window of opportunity<\/strong>. In Feb, it snowed with a hard blowing wind<\/strong>. When it died down, I went to the airport to survey the situation. The field surface<\/strong> showed potential but visibility<\/strong> was only a mile<\/strong> and the air was quite humid<\/strong>. I decided to wait another day or so for a better moment. This proved to be a mistake as soon thereafter, the sun beat down so hard it seemed like Spring was starting early. For about a week or so I was disappointed with myself for not taking that “last” Snow Covered, Winter Flight Opportunity<\/em> – Possibly the last one around here for Decades! That changed last weekend. Temperatures dropped<\/strong> dramatically along with a good quantity of snow. The high wind stopped<\/strong> on Monday the 3rd of March, the sky was clear and I knew it was time to act.<\/p>\n

Stage 3 Winter Attire<\/h4>\n

The first picture<\/strong> in this report\u00a0was taken just after I arrived<\/strong> at the field before<\/strong> opening<\/strong> the hangar<\/strong>. I had brought my “wind proof”<\/em> snow suit<\/strong>, flight jacket<\/strong>,\u00a0electric gloves<\/strong>, two sets of neck gaiters<\/strong>, warm boots<\/strong> and helmet<\/strong>. The only missing “Stage 3”<\/em> element was long underwear<\/strong>. They were not missed. The ambient air temperature was 15 degrees<\/strong> when I arrived with about a 5 mph surface wind<\/strong> from the South<\/strong>. It was cold enough that my uncovered hands lost feeling while I pre-flighted the plane<\/strong> and took\u00a0pictures<\/strong>. When finally airborne<\/strong>, I am happy to say\u00a0<\/strong>my experimental<\/strong> wind fairing<\/strong> did its job. I was quite comfortable. My face mask<\/strong> fogged<\/strong> up a few times and had to be cleared but that was the only physical indication<\/strong> of how cold it was.<\/p>\n

Pre-Flight & Suit Up<\/h4>\n

I opened<\/strong> the hangar and pulled my plane to the opening where the light<\/strong> was better<\/strong>. Naturally I was thinking “photo op”<\/em> and took a few pix. Geese from all around the region use the lake on the Southwest<\/strong> part of the Selby property<\/strong> to congregate. The word was out that afternoon for everyone to show up at The Aerodrome<\/strong> so all the while I was pre-flighting, warming up the engine and taking pictures,\u00a0geese<\/strong> passed over in abundance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Herding Geese<\/h4>\n

Occasionally during this time of season for fun I will “herd”<\/em> a small flock of geese<\/strong>. If a suitable group<\/strong> presents itself, I’ll dial my engine back to minimum flight speed<\/strong> and pull in just far enough behind them that they start looking over their shoulders<\/strong> at me. The flock will bank left to try to lose me and I will swing farther left and shift them to the right, etc. Sometimes I can turn them\u00a0180 degrees<\/strong>. I don’t carry this on too long because it is obvious the stunt tires them out. They don’t think it is as fun as I do…<\/em><\/p>\n

Quicksilver In Winter<\/p><\/div>\n

No Video – No Story<\/h4>\n

In the 80’s when I shot TV News<\/strong>, we had a saying “No Video – No Story”<\/em>. Even though they have to do\u00a0“reader”<\/em> stories with a still photo or graphic next to the anchor’s shoulder<\/strong>, news producers avoid those segments like the plague. \u00a0Whether it is shakey<\/em>, out of focus or missing sound<\/em> – any video<\/strong> is preferable to a slide or graphic. This can help you understand why you frequently see “lame” news stories on TV that don’t seem to have any relevance<\/strong> to your town or even your area of the country. They run these stories only because the video was compelling<\/strong> in some way to the producers – NOT because the story necessarily had much intrinsic value. (McLuhan: “The medium is the message\/massage”<\/a>)<\/p>\n

They are<\/span> caught on the horns of a dilemma<\/strong>, though. For example, TV audiences will watch a “news story” consisting of\u00a0cute pictures<\/strong> of someone’s dog doing wacky tricks by a large margin<\/strong> over a “talking head”<\/em>\u00a0economist explaining how government induced inflation is sapping your buying power and savings. The economist<\/strong>\u00a0supplying information VITAL TO YOUR LIFE will be ignored<\/strong> by<\/strong> a vast majority of the TV audience<\/strong> simply because he is not balancing one-legged on a beach ball while juggling his calculators<\/em>. He is not entertaining<\/span> – the puppy is<\/strong> – so no one cares what Professor I. M. Numbers<\/strong> has to say. So, to get the all important ratings necessary to engender advertising support – Run The Puppy!<\/strong><\/p>\n

In similar ways, The Sky Surfer<\/strong> plays between the same goalposts<\/strong>. A flight in sub-freezing temperatures has the same intrinsic value with or without pictures<\/strong>. But without pictures nobody cares<\/strong> and… they may not believe<\/em>. There are a few Sky Surfer Dudes<\/strong> and Dudettes<\/strong><\/a> that read his sparkling prose<\/strong> but most just scan a few of The Flite Blog\u2122<\/strong> pictures. Therefore additional effort is always expended to put\u00a0The Surfer<\/strong> in the scene to “validate” the story…<\/p>\n

While staging this picture, The Sky Surfer<\/strong>\u00a0thinks he exudes the same “joie de vivre<\/a>” evidenced by Wiley Post<\/strong>\u00a0when holding his “space suit helmet”<\/em> in the famous picture<\/a> taken with\u00a0“Winnie Mae”<\/em> before climbing into the Stratosphere<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Pass Go And Collect<\/h4>\n

When I was young, the game Monopoly<\/a> was quite popular. When you passed “Go”<\/em> on the game board you would collect a salary. “Pass Go And Collect”<\/em> entered the lexicon with a variety of connotations. For one group, it was a term of derision<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

My Dad<\/strong>, who was a fighter pilot<\/strong>, used that term to describe an ignoble practice<\/strong> happening during The Viet Nam War<\/strong>. As a young man, I overheard<\/strong> him discuss with his friends once how certain<\/strong> “desk jockeys”<\/em> would arrange flights in C-130’s over a combat zone<\/strong> in order to obtain combat pay<\/strong> they did not actually deserve. To do this was to “Pass Go And Collect”<\/em>…<\/p>\n

While fooling around taking of the shot above,\u00a0my<\/strong> hands lost their feeling<\/strong>, I was concerned I might have to “Pass Go And Collect”<\/em>. Because of the cold, I thought I might have to take off, quickly snap a few pix, land and go home. This story wasn’t worth frostbite. I am happy to report that did not happen<\/strong>. The fairing<\/strong> and my winter outfit worked<\/strong> so well and the flight<\/strong> was interesting<\/strong>, so\u00a0I stayed up almost an hour and a half<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Geese “Herd” The Sky Surfer<\/h4>\n

Above you see the view from the cockpit as I taxied out. The wind<\/strong> was from that direction (South)<\/em> but I elected not to take off that way because of the gathering congregation<\/strong>. Geese<\/strong> always avoid<\/strong> the big, noisy yellow bird<\/strong> when I am airborne. Unfortunately they are not too smart<\/strong>. I knew a large flock<\/strong> could easily panic<\/strong> and flail<\/strong> in all directions. Striking a large bird<\/strong> is the bane of any<\/strong> size airplane<\/strong>. I elected to take off downwind to the North<\/strong>. That and the snow obstructing my tires caused my takeoff roll<\/strong> to be somewhat longer<\/strong> than usual. Once in the air, though, the MXL performed superbly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

You can see the sun on the floor of the hangar where it cut through from the windows on the South wall.<\/p><\/div>\n

Looking North Northwest<\/strong> at The Field<\/strong> again. Here the “Geese Party Beach”<\/em> Southwest<\/strong> of the landing field is most evident. They are spread across the field South<\/strong> of the lake and on the airfield, too.<\/p><\/div>\n

Surfer Warm – Camera Not<\/h4>\n

During the regular season I use CopperTop<\/strong> batteries for my camera because they last the longest. It uses\u00a0AA’s<\/strong> and I keep extras<\/strong> in my pocket if they go dead on a mission. This flight taught me about their inability to withstand the cold<\/strong>, though. Even after switching to an backup,<\/strong> new set of batteries, the camera kept shutting down<\/strong> warning me to “replace batteries”<\/em>. In the old days, this was a known issue with NiCad batteries<\/strong>. They could not produce a charge in the cold. When we shot video in the winter, the standard operating procedure<\/em> was to keep NiCads<\/strong> inside your jacket against your body keeping them warm. As soon as one got too cold and failed you would switch it with a “warm” one. Until “The Winter Challenge” flight, I did not realize regular dry cells have the same problem<\/strong>. I had to keep cycling the camera to get these shots. It would only stay “on” for about 20 seconds…<\/strong><\/p>\n

From about 600′ AGL over Frog Holler<\/strong> I tried this telephoto “compression shot”<\/em>\u00a0to capture part of\u00a0Selby Aerodrome<\/strong> and the Gavilon Grain Elevator Complex<\/strong><\/a>. Not bad.<\/p><\/div>\n

\u00a0Sometimes You Just Have To Take What You Get<\/h4>\n

I tried the shot above about 6 times<\/strong>. For most of the passes I had the MXL<\/strong>\u00a0shadow<\/strong> much closer<\/strong> and much bigger<\/strong> but the camera would shut down<\/strong> just as I was snapping the picture. I also saw a really nice “MXL shadow in a hedgerow”<\/em>\u00a0photo op. I tried to get that one about 5-7 times<\/strong>, too, but never<\/strong> got a satisfactory<\/strong> image – maybe another time<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Another Low Temperature Indicator<\/h4>\n

I really love my PowerFin Propeller<\/strong><\/a>. It is one of the keys<\/strong> to the great<\/strong>\u00a0performance<\/strong> of this plane. My\u00a0Standard Operating Procedure<\/strong> is to clean the prop<\/strong> after every flight. Years ago I chose windshield wiper fluid<\/strong> as my prop cleaner. It was cold enough<\/strong> that as soon as I spread the wiper fluid<\/strong> across the prop with my rag, it would freeze<\/strong>. I took a couple of shots so you could see it.<\/p>\n

Worthwhile<\/h4>\n

After approaching this flight as “a challenge”<\/em>, I now see that Winter Flying<\/strong> my Ultralight<\/strong> with the improved windscreen<\/strong> and Stage 3 Cold Outfit<\/strong> isn’t so bad<\/em>. I’ll be getting out more during the cold<\/strong> but mostly look forward for the arrival of\u00a0“T-Shirt Weather”<\/em>! Then The Sky Surfer<\/strong> can don his “jams”<\/em> and surf the skies without shivering<\/em>!<\/p>\n
