I learned this and many other things about sunflowers in 2008 while I was shooting a segment of my music video “Lil Prop – Big Prop” (Part of the movie on Ultralight Flying “UFM2“). During the research phase for this shoot, I found Farmer Marty Ternes who cultivates land a couple miles North of the village of Riverdale, Kansas. To find him I had visited several Farmer’s Co-ops to see if there was a consensus regarding the best sunflower field around. Marty was highly regarded so I sought him out. First off, he squelched their “sun-tracking” capability. Then he explained that commercial sunflowers (like the ones shown in this article) have been purposely bred to “droop” their faces down after the seeds have developed. The seeds are the crop. They are harvested to make sunflower oil and snack food. Before the development of the “drooping” strain, a large flock of birds could descend on a field before harvest and pick it clean. No place for the birds to land and eat means one less problem for the farmer. The problem with the “drooping heads” for me, though, was that this makes for a narrow window of “Photographic Opportunity”. Sunflowers look their best with their faces gazing toward the sky. These modern varieties only do that for between 5 and 14 days before they tip completely over and stare at the ground.
