Weather<\/h4>\n

Flying<\/strong> is all about\u00a0The Atmosphere<\/strong>\u00a0in the same manner that\u00a0Sailing<\/strong> is all about\u00a0The Ocean<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Fall in Kansas<\/strong> presents the Ultralight Flyer<\/strong> a variety of <\/strong>weather<\/strong>\u00a0potentials<\/strong>. As Forrest Gump –<\/strong>\u00a0Wise Prophet of Old –<\/em>\u00a0advised us, “You never know what you’re gonna get”<\/em>. It can be cold<\/strong>. It can be warm<\/strong>. It can be windy<\/strong>. It can be calm<\/strong>. It can be\u00a0humid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>

Just before Dawn<\/strong>, the MXL<\/strong> surveys an airfield<\/strong> high on humidity<\/strong> but devoid<\/strong> of wind<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Waynoka, Oklahoma and Little Sahara<\/h4>\n

Over the Summer<\/strong>\u00a0a flight to Waynoka<\/strong> was in the plans. A distance of 108 miles<\/strong> from my home field, it would be at the limit of my fuel endurance<\/strong>. Because of this I was waiting for the right atmospheric conditions<\/strong> to make this run. A slowly rising<\/span> Southwest Wind<\/strong> would be required\u00a0under\u00a0which I could fly on the way there\u00a0and that would give me a tailwind<\/strong>\u00a0boost<\/strong> on the way home. The day before that Saturday Flight<\/strong> the Weather Soothsayers<\/strong> predicted the air I needed, so I prepared for the journey<\/strong>. Prior to doing my Fun Flight research<\/strong>, I knew nothing about Waynoka<\/strong> – at least not by name<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A year ago when I told people about my flight<\/strong> to the Salt Flats<\/strong> next to Cherokee, Oklahoma<\/strong> (“Salt Flat Safari”)<\/em><\/a>, just about everybody said, “Oh, did you see the sand dunes?”<\/em>. At first I thought they were just flat confused<\/strong>. “Salt Flats”<\/em> seems kinda like “Sand Dunes”<\/em> if you are not listening carefully… Then I learned there are<\/span> sand dunes in Northern Oklahoma<\/strong>. Frankly they aren’t that close to Cherokee <\/strong>but that started to make sense. I had also heard of The Annual Rattlesnake Hunt<\/strong>\u00a0 in that area but had never connected it to Waynoka<\/strong>. So, all that – and more<\/em> – would be revealed<\/strong> as this trip unfolded<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Unusual Sight<\/h4>\n

After takeoff I noticed the hanging fog<\/strong> evident at my airfield was not a solo\u00a0occurrence. I have lived in Virginia, Oregon, California and Missouri in parts of those states where morning ground fog<\/strong> is common. It is not a sight common<\/strong> to South Central Kansas<\/strong>. Coming off the Arkansas River<\/strong>, enhanced by the light of the rising sun<\/strong>, this fog was a sight to see<\/strong>. For a moment, I had to turn away from my direction of travel<\/strong> to capture these next images<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Minutes later after resuming<\/strong> my course, bright rays<\/strong> flashing under<\/strong> my wings<\/strong> alerted me to the Rising of the Sun<\/strong>. I swung around in my seat to get this\u00a0out “the back window”<\/em>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Getting Down To Business<\/h4>\n

After passing over The I-35 Turnpike<\/strong> and the relatively<\/em> dense rural habitations<\/strong>\u00a0just Southwest<\/strong> of Selby Aerodrome<\/strong><\/a>, I settled down to a cruising altitude of 200′ to 300′ AGL<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I liked the way the new morning sun<\/strong> played against the East<\/strong> side of this homestead<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>

Clearwater Road<\/strong> heading into its namesake Clearwater, Kansas<\/strong><\/a>. I am at 200′ AGL<\/strong> looking West<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>

The Ninnescah River South<\/strong> of Clearwater<\/strong>. I am at 150′ AGL<\/strong> looking Northwest<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>

I can’t imagine any other reason the owner of this New Holland Tractor<\/strong><\/a> made this interesting pattern before shutting down than to give me an attractive backdrop<\/strong> for an aerial photo of the rig. Nice!<\/p><\/div>\n

First Sighting<\/h4>\n

About 15 minutes into the flight I made my first wildlife sighting<\/strong>. Three deer<\/strong> were milling about on a country road. I banked right<\/strong> to get a better look at them. Their choice of position had left them no cover<\/strong> so they circled around the tree row seen below. This is an object lesson as to why Infantry<\/strong> are at such a disadvantage to Airpower<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A few minutes later I saw another group<\/strong>. This one was making a beeline<\/strong> for the small forest Northwest<\/strong> of my position. You can see my shadow<\/strong> at the center left of the picture. The Morning Memo\u00a0For Deer<\/strong> that day was to travel in threes<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>

I glanced over my left shoulder back toward the sun<\/strong> and saw this house<\/strong> on a ridge. The\u00a0low hanging fog\u00a0<\/strong>gives the shot nice depth<\/strong>. I’m at 200′ AGL<\/strong> looking East Southeast<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Red Dirt Country<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/a>

Miles of Red Dirt<\/strong>! You don’t need a GPS<\/strong> to know you are in Oklahoma<\/strong> with this type of prompting. I was at 100′ AGL<\/strong> when I recorded this GlennView<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Horizontal Drilling \/ Fracking<\/h4>\n

Between Anthony, Kansas<\/strong><\/a> and Cherokee, Oklahoma<\/strong><\/a> is an area that has seen a dramatic increase<\/strong> in oil exploration over the last five years<\/strong>. Below is my attempt to give you a panoramic view<\/strong> of part<\/span> of this area just South<\/strong> of the Kansas \/ Oklahoma Border<\/strong> as I entered it from the Northeast<\/strong>. In the foreground<\/strong> and in the distance<\/strong>, any bright white color<\/strong> you see has to do with oil and gas<\/strong>. I will be showing a number of these installations<\/strong> as the flight continues.<\/p>\n

Oil Country<\/p><\/div>\n

Flowers?<\/h4>\n

This next shot is the best I could do to present an amazing situation<\/strong> I had never encountered before. The photo below<\/strong> was of the second field<\/strong>\u00a0I passed over featuring this phenomena<\/strong>. It took that long to get the camera ready<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Here is what I saw…<\/em> As I first<\/strong> came upon the field, it seemed to be covered with little white flowers<\/strong>. They were attractive but too small<\/strong> and not<\/strong> sufficiently bright<\/strong> to warrant a photo. Then, halfway<\/strong> across the first field, I realized they were not flowers<\/strong> but butterflies<\/strong>! Because of the brightness of the sun they show best<\/strong> in the shadow of my airplane. Then, if you look closely<\/strong>, you can see them equally arrayed over the entire field<\/strong>. I think the crop is\u00a0alfalfa<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>

Butterfly Bonanza<\/p><\/div>\n

Flaring<\/a><\/h4>\n

Flaring<\/strong> has become controversial but its opponents mis-state the issue either out of ignorance or a desire to mislead. Environmentalists<\/strong> are suing oil companies for “wasting”<\/em> gas when they have to flare it. The fact of the matter is that oil companies flare gas only as a last resort. If they made even a casual attempt at understanding the oil and gas business, enviros<\/strong> would realize that petroleum people<\/strong> would love to make money<\/strong> off the gas but sometimes it is not possible. Pipelines are very expensive<\/strong> and cannot be laid without significant return on investment<\/strong> (ROI)<\/em>. Alternatively, the equipment<\/strong> required to compress gas<\/strong> for storage and then transport it is costly and warranted only over a large discovery where no pipeline<\/strong> can be utilized.<\/p>\n

Safety<\/h4>\n

The overriding issue<\/strong>\u00a0for producers\u00a0is one of safety<\/strong>. When drilling for oil<\/strong>, most of the time gas is present<\/strong>. Obviously it is highly flammable<\/strong>. If allowed to escape into the atmosphere<\/strong>, the results can be\u00a0disastrous<\/strong>. If gas leaks, fire or explosion is the rule. Flaring<\/strong>\u00a0at a wellhead is the\u00a0undesirable<\/strong>\u00a0but necessary<\/strong> method to protect against catastrophe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This is by far the largest well site flare<\/strong> I have seen in my travels. Note the heat wave<\/strong> distortion over the fire plume<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Wheat Field Break<\/h4>\n

I had been flying over two hours<\/strong> and decided to take a break. My favorite landing fields<\/strong> are (mowed)<\/em>\u00a0hay and \u00a0wheat fields. I was about 8 miles from Waynoka<\/strong>, saw this fine open field and put her down.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Just Around The Corner<\/h4>\n

After taking a break (and a couple of “product shots” of my MXL)<\/em>, I checked the paper map<\/strong> to confirm<\/strong> I was only 8 miles<\/strong> from Waynoka<\/strong>\u00a0– just as the GPS<\/strong> indicated.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>

Off by its lonesome was this rather impressive plant<\/strong>. If I were to guess, I would say it is either a water disposal<\/strong> well, a gas compression<\/strong> unit or something to do with fracking<\/strong>. If anybody knows what it is, let me know and I’ll post it here…<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n

Plains to Bluffs<\/h4>\n

Suddenly the topography<\/strong> changed to these interesting bluff formations<\/strong>. This area had “Cowboy and Indian Movie”<\/em> written all over it.<\/p>\n

Same altitude<\/strong> and angle as above. As I approached I wondered if someone was watching me from the hunting blind<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Waynoka Ho!<\/h4>\n

I was flying so low that when I finally came upon Waynoka<\/strong> I could see very little of the town. My SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) when arriving at a new destination<\/strong> is to encircle<\/strong> the town to take photos before landing<\/strong>. One reason I do this is for “safety shooting”<\/em>. By that I mean I get the aerial shots<\/strong> of the town on arrival<\/strong> in case the weather should turn against me while touring the town. A quick egress<\/strong> would prevent the taking of aerials before striking camp and high-tailing it for home. To me, the photo-documentary aspect<\/strong> a flight to visit a new town would be severely lacking<\/strong> bereft of aerial photos of the town in question. So<\/strong>, I always take them when I arrive<\/strong> and then again when I leave<\/strong>. \u00a0Since I was approaching from the Northeast<\/strong> and the Airport<\/strong> was on the Southeast<\/strong> side of town, best coverage would be obtained by making a counter-clockwise circumnavigation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Little Sahara<\/h4>\n

In addition to the aerials of Waynoka<\/strong>, of great importance was to get photos of the Famous Little Sahara<\/a> Sand Dunes South<\/strong> of town AND “2 shots”<\/em> of the City<\/strong> and Sahara<\/strong> together. That’s what you will see next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Almost directly North<\/strong> of town, I am only 100′<\/strong> off the ground. Right after this I “poured on the coal” and climbed<\/strong> to 1,500′ AGL\u00a0<\/strong>for a better perspective<\/strong> of Waynoka<\/strong> and the Sand Dunes<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>

While climbing<\/strong> to position for the Little Sahara<\/strong> and “City\/Sand”<\/em> Combo Shots<\/strong>, I was blessed with this grand entry<\/strong> of a long train<\/strong> set against the picturesque bluffs West<\/strong> of Waynoka<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

The next order of affairs was to get a complete “East to West”<\/em> panoramic of Little Sahara<\/strong><\/a>. this is from 1,500′ AGL looking South<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

I have now come around to the South<\/strong>. This is from 1,000′ AGL<\/strong> looking North<\/strong> with part of Little Sahara<\/strong> in the foreground and Waynoka<\/strong> in the distance. Lots Of Action<\/a><\/h4>\n

There were loads of 4-wheelers<\/strong> and motorcycles<\/strong> coursing in all directions across the dunes<\/strong> that morning. When I was a teen, dune buggies<\/em> were converted Volkswagens<\/strong>. While there are still some<\/strong> of that type around, the field has widened considerably. Some of the 4-wheelers<\/strong> are built ground-up for this purpose. Others are sold ready-to-ride<\/em>. I shot this series of\u00a0telephoto pix<\/strong> from 1,000′ AGL<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I am over the middle of the dunes now looking East<\/strong>. Next to the highway you can see the parking lots<\/strong> for the dunes.<\/p><\/div>\n

This is a wide shot looking Southeast<\/strong>. I get the impression this area is a “straightaway”<\/em> racing zone complete with three jumps. If not, it should be…<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n

Here you can see some of the huge rigs<\/strong> people use to bring their dune riders to Little Sahara<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Lower Angle<\/h4>\n

I was very impressed with all the action<\/strong> of the scene below me and still had some fuel left so I dropped down to 500′ AGL<\/strong> to make some passes across the North Side<\/strong> of the dunes.<\/p>\n

People seem to travel the dunes in little groups<\/strong>. It looked to me like they have favorite places<\/strong> they show each other. When they get to these spots they try jumping<\/strong> or climbing<\/strong> the obstacle.<\/p><\/div>\n

Time To Re-join The Earthbound<\/h4>\n

I had spent about 20 minutes<\/strong> flying over the dunes and it was time to get a look at Waynoka<\/strong>. Wind was starting to build from the South<\/strong>. I set up for a right hand pattern to land at Waynoka\u00a0Municipal<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Waynoka Muni<\/h4>\n

Waynoka<\/strong> has a nice asphalt runway, the grounds are well kept. \u00a0The terminal building<\/strong> is in good shape and they have a courtesy car<\/strong> to use. Like a majority of small town airfields<\/strong>, there is no fuel<\/strong> available but I bring my own gas containers which I fill at the closest gas station<\/strong>. The courtesy car<\/strong> really helps in that regard. Otherwise I walk…<\/p>\n

Welcoming Committee<\/h4>\n

While I was tying my MXL<\/strong> down, a car arrived. The driver was Sue Hughes<\/strong>. The passenger was Murphy The Dog<\/strong>. Sue<\/strong> and her husband Dale<\/strong> are recent immigrants from Denver, Colorado<\/strong><\/a>. They desired the benefits of “small town life”<\/em> and had moved to Waynoka<\/strong> six months prior.<\/p>\n

Volunteerism<\/h4>\n

A consistent theme<\/strong> I see in the small towns I visit is the large extent<\/strong> to which citizens contribute their time and effort to various public service committees<\/strong>. Dale<\/strong> and Sue<\/strong> have an interest in aviation (they own a 1981 “T-Tail”\u00a0Piper Arrow<\/a>)<\/em> so upon moving there they joined Waynoka’s Airport Advisory Committee<\/strong>. The morning I met them they were hard at the Committee Work<\/strong> of keeping the runway free of intruding plants and weeds.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>

Sue Hughes and Murphy<\/p><\/div>\n

\u00a0Powder Puff Pilot<\/h4>\n

Sue<\/strong> has a business oriented toward women pilots<\/strong> and female aviation\u00a0aficionados<\/strong>\u00a0called Powder Puff Pilot<\/strong>. It features lots of av-equipment, apparel and educational items – many would make excellent Christmas, Birthday or Anytime Gifts<\/strong>. Check out her website\u00a0HERE<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dale Hughes<\/h4>\n

Five minutes after Sue<\/strong> went back to her chores, husband Dale<\/strong> showed up to ask if I needed anything. They were working on opposite ends of the field. Dale<\/strong> is Sales Manager<\/strong> for Brance-Krachy<\/strong><\/a> which is a company in Aurora, Colorado<\/strong> involved in power transmission<\/strong> supplies and service. In answer to his question I told him the battery in the Courtesy Car<\/strong> seemed to be low but I had already called the dispatcher<\/strong> and help was on the way. He said, “Good deal. Nice to meet you. I have to get back to work now. Have a nice time in Waynoka<\/strong>.”<\/em> Then he said Goodbye and returned to his work.<\/p>\n

Dale Hughes of Waynoka<\/p><\/div>\n

Battery Low<\/h4>\n

After getting my plane secured<\/strong> I entered the terminal rest room to remove the long underwear<\/strong> I had employed to take the edge off the early morning chill. Then I loaded my stuff into the Courtesy Car<\/strong> and turned the key. All the lights<\/strong> on the dash came up, the fuel pump<\/strong> whirred and the radio<\/strong> came on but the engine<\/strong> would not turn. Because it was a decommissioned police patrol car<\/strong> it had some unique buttons<\/strong> about the console. I tried every one<\/strong> I could to see if they were some type of ignition lock<\/strong> but finally decided the battery<\/strong> just didn’t have enough amps<\/strong> to turn the motor. I called the telephone number<\/strong> given in the airport lounge<\/strong> and the county dispatcher said help<\/strong> would arrive soon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Cavalry To The Rescue<\/h4>\n

Bein’s how the Courtesy Car<\/strong> was a retired patrol car<\/strong>, it seemed fitting that two Waynoka Patrolmen<\/strong> came to give me a jump. This situation was fortuitous<\/strong> for them also, as both had been intrigued<\/strong> for years with\u00a0Ultralight Flying<\/strong>\u00a0but had not had a chance to see one up close. After starting the car I gave them an in-depth walk around<\/strong> of the Quicksilver<\/strong> and a good discussion of the merits<\/strong> and issues<\/strong> of this type of Sport Flying<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Officer Chris Fike<\/strong> and Officer Matthew Marcum<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

First Things First<\/h4>\n

After thanking Fike<\/strong> and Marcum<\/strong>, they went back on patrol<\/strong> and I headed into town for some gas<\/strong>. I’m big on prioritizing<\/strong>. Priority One<\/strong> was to transport gas<\/strong> back to the airplane<\/strong> before exploring the town.<\/p>\n

As I left the gas station<\/strong> I saw this radical sand machine<\/strong> round the turn in my rear view mirror<\/strong>. I quickly pulled over while lowering my window and firing up my camera. Good thing I hurried because he made a microsecond stop<\/strong> at the stop sign and headed away. That was the moment<\/strong> I grabbed above.<\/p><\/div>\n

A couple of minutes later a duo of 4 wheelers<\/strong> came bounding around another turn<\/strong> (the tire of the second one is just visible behind the shack to the right)<\/em>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Here the two of them head back to The Dunes<\/strong>. This is one of the designated paths<\/strong> for the Dune Riders<\/strong> to get in and out of town so they don’t mix with regular vehicular traffic<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

The Waynoka Historical Society<\/a><\/h4>\n

While researching<\/strong> before my flight I discovered The Waynoka Historical Society<\/strong>. They are a dedicated<\/strong> and active<\/strong> group devoted to preserving<\/strong> the history<\/strong> of their town. For such a small town<\/strong> they have accomplished much<\/b>.\u00a0They have done a splendid job renovating The Harvey House<\/strong> and have also moved historic buildings<\/strong> and railroad items<\/strong> into a convenient outdoor display<\/strong> adjacent to The House<\/strong>. This next series will show you some of these things.<\/p>\n

Transcontinental Air Transport (TAT)<\/h4>\n

This caboose and gorilla are positioned to the North<\/strong> of The Harvey House<\/strong>. They are not property of the Historical Society<\/strong> but are owned by Dune Enthusiasts\u00a0<\/strong>who visit the area frequently.<\/p><\/div>\n

A Project of Chesapeake Energy<\/h4>\n

The Sky Surfer’s Air Adventures<\/strong> are “slices of time”. So, what you see is what he saw the day he was there. It is important<\/strong> to point out<\/strong> that the two buildings<\/strong> photographed below<\/strong> are in the midst of a renovation<\/strong> being funded<\/strong> and staffed<\/strong> by Chesapeake Energy<\/strong><\/a>. Thus far<\/span> in the project they have power-washed<\/strong>, scraped<\/strong> and applied<\/strong> the first coat of primer<\/strong>. Another<\/strong> coat of primer<\/strong> will be applied before the final painting<\/strong> is completed. The “cornerstone”<\/em> of the railroad display<\/strong> is the elegant brick and stone Santa Fe Train Station<\/strong>. Soon the inside will house more artifacts<\/strong> in addition to the museum<\/strong> already built on the second story of The Harvey House<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

The Waynoka Harvey House<\/h4>\n

Earlier in the report you saw the\u00a0aerial photo<\/strong> of this fine building made during my initial pass<\/strong> around the town. An ediface of The\u00a0Fred Harvey Company<\/strong><\/a>, the Harvey House<\/strong> aspiration was “to bring civilization to the wild west”<\/em>. Good food at reasonable prices was served by highly trained, polite staff in elegant surroundings<\/strong>. At the company’s zenith<\/strong>, there were 84 Harvey Houses<\/strong> in the country. \u00a0More about Harvey Houses HERE<\/strong><\/a>.

My intention was to tour Waynoka first<\/strong> and then return to The Harvey House<\/strong> for a bite to eat<\/strong> and a look at the museum<\/strong>. So now I will show you what caught my eye around Waynoka<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Brick Houses<\/h4>\n

I am partial to brick<\/strong> and stone homes<\/strong>. One reason is that they are becoming<\/strong> increasingly rare<\/strong>. Another reason is my memory of The Three Little Pigs<\/strong><\/a>. The brick house<\/strong> was the strong house<\/strong>. The next picture was the first brick home on this street to catch my attention.<\/p>\n

Solar Power<\/h4>\n

Then I looked<\/strong> across the street and saw the largest private dwelling solar cell array<\/strong> I have ever seen. If you haven’t figured this out yet, I’m not the bashful type, so I knocked on the door to talk to the owner about it. Jim Parks<\/strong> emerged and was quite happy to discuss his solar device<\/strong>. He told me he bought it around 2000<\/strong>, it had been dependable<\/strong> and it would power<\/strong> his whole house<\/strong> – while the sun was shining<\/em>. After all those years of operation, he was enduring the recent failure of the switch<\/strong> that automatically takes the house from solar power<\/strong> to grid power<\/strong>. Jim<\/strong> said the manufacturer<\/strong> was wanting more money<\/strong> than he was willing to pay so he was in negotiation mode while at the same time looking for an alternative vendor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Jim<\/strong> had retired from the Hardware Store Business<\/strong>. He was born in Waynoka<\/strong> in 1925<\/strong> and Served in the Navy’s Submarine Force in World War II<\/strong>. I also found that he is active in The Historical Society<\/strong>. He informed me that a considerable amount of money had gone into the Museum<\/strong>. I told him I was looking forward to seeing it and I was heading there after looking around town.<\/p>\n

Caf\u00e9 Bahnhof<\/strong><\/a> was not open that morning but I was told it is quite good and that people will drive considerable distances to eat there.<\/p><\/div>\n

The main floor of The Harvey House is now occupied by El Charro Restaurant. The service and food was good.<\/p><\/div>\n

After I finished my lunch I stopped in the Gift Shop<\/strong> and spoke with Anita Bettencort<\/strong>. She is a member of The Waynoka Historical Society<\/strong>. She has lived in Waynoka<\/strong> all her life after being born in Blackwell, Oklahoma<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n

The Museum<\/h4>\n

On the second floor<\/strong> of The Harvey House<\/strong> is the Museum<\/strong> containing artifacts and information about Fred Harvey’s business<\/strong> and Transcontinental Air Transport<\/strong>. It is very modern<\/strong> in design and interesting<\/strong> to tour. There was quite a bit to see but I only took a few pictures<\/strong> to give you a taste of it.<\/p>\n

Workin’ The Wind<\/h4>\n

I feel like a broken record<\/strong> on this, but my Fun Flight Method<\/strong><\/a>, which I have discussed many times, is predicated on flying under the wind<\/strong> in the morning and then catching it as a tailwind<\/strong> for the flight home (Catching The Wave)<\/em>. The weather forecast that day was panning out 100% accurate. So as the afternoon wore on I knew I needed to get airborne to take best advantage of the changing wind conditions. As the day progressed, the wind would swing from the West<\/strong> to the South<\/strong>. My best scenario would be to catch it during its Southwesterly<\/strong> mode. It was about 2 pm<\/strong> and the wind was doing exactly that. I had seen a good bit of Waynoka<\/strong> and it was time to go.<\/p>\n

On the way back to the airport I saw Stewart’s Sand Sports<\/strong><\/a> on Hwy 281, the road to Little Sahara<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Up And Out<\/h4>\n

After returning to the airport I unloaded my stuff, closed the windows, locked up the Courtesy Car<\/strong> and secured its key in the lockbox. After a pre-flight walk-around<\/strong> of the Quicksilver<\/strong>, I fired it up and took to the air. As per my Standard Operating Procedure<\/strong>, I took a few more pictures<\/strong> of Waynoka<\/strong> while leaving the area.<\/p>\n

To the right of my course, more of the grandeur of this landscape is revealed. This is from 1,800′ AGL<\/strong> looking Southeast<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

About 10 minutes out of Waynoka<\/strong> I saw this below me. I would call these “salt or alkali washes”<\/em>. I am at 1,500′ AGL<\/strong> looking Northeast<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Halfway<\/strong> between Waynoka<\/strong> and Alva<\/strong> I saw this plant. I think it is a gas\u00a0pressurization\u00a0and pumping station.<\/p><\/div>\n

Then a couple miles farther Northeast<\/strong> I saw this one. I am at 1,200′ AGL<\/strong> looking Northeast<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Here is the previous facility as I passed by it. If you look closely you can see two construction cranes<\/strong>. It is a “work in progress”<\/em>.<\/p><\/div>\n

My path took me directly over yet another gas plant. This one is due South of Alva, Oklahoma<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Alva, Oklahoma – City Of Many Murals And More…<\/h4>\n

Below is a photo of Alva, Oklahoma<\/strong><\/a> from 1,000′ AGL<\/strong> looking North<\/strong>. On a previous Sky Surfing Excursion<\/strong> I landed at the airport in the foreground – Alva Regional Airport<\/strong><\/a>. Oil And Gas Resurgence<\/h4>\n

The next series<\/strong> of shots will give you an inkling as to the tremendous effort expended<\/strong> over the last few years in Oil and Gas exploration\u00a0<\/strong>near the border of Kansas<\/strong> and Oklahoma<\/strong>. These are all different “rows”<\/em> of installations stretching for miles. Normally<\/strong> wells are drilled directly<\/strong> over<\/strong> the suspected pool<\/strong>. These installations<\/strong> are strung out evenly along<\/strong> county roads<\/strong>. My guess is that they are Horizontal Fracking<\/strong> efforts.<\/p>\n

Argonia, Kansas<\/a><\/h4>\n

Argonia<\/strong> is interesting for at least two reasons (and no doubt many more)<\/em>. One is shown below is Argonia’s Power Plant<\/strong>. They generate their own electricity. Number two<\/strong> is their hosting of the Annual Amateur High Power Rocket Shoot<\/strong>. I produced a documentary<\/strong> on this sport called “A Beginner’s Guide to Amateur High Powered Rocketry<\/a>“<\/strong>. While working on the piece I visited Argonia<\/strong> on several occasions to gather interviews<\/strong> and footage<\/strong>. OK,<\/em> Three Things<\/strong>… Argonia<\/strong> also maintains a nice grass field airport<\/a> on its Northeast<\/strong> side on which I have landed many times.<\/p>\n

Most<\/strong> of my efforts<\/strong> to date have been hampered<\/strong> by haze<\/strong> and humidity<\/strong>. The next two shots<\/strong> are the best so far. From the same position over Selby Aerodrome<\/strong>, I worked on a panoramic<\/strong> and a telephoto<\/strong>. Below I present the best<\/strong> of the litter.<\/p>\n

Waynoka<\/strong> played an important part of an early 20th Century<\/strong> effort to combine air<\/strong> and rail<\/strong> transport<\/strong> enabling a coast-to-coast<\/strong> trip in 48 hours<\/strong>. The Lone Eagle – Charles Lindbergh<\/strong> – was a member of The Board of Directors<\/strong>. It was he that planned the route. You can read more about TAT<\/strong>\u00a0HERE<\/strong><\/a>.
