Archetype<\/h4>\n

Merriam Webster On-Line Dictionary<\/strong><\/a> defines “Archetype”<\/strong> as\u00a0the original pattern or model of which all things of the same type are representations or copies<\/span>. Now, I’m not saying other<\/strong><\/span> clubs<\/strong> or individuals<\/strong> don’t have excellent<\/strong> Fly-Ins<\/strong>. Neither am I saying they are “the original”<\/em>. But, if you are staging your first Fly-In Event<\/strong> and want a template<\/strong> from which to proceed<\/strong>, you can’t do any better than to follow the example<\/strong> of the Monthly Fly-In<\/strong> at Ponca City Regional<\/strong><\/a> sponsored by The Ponca City Aviation Booster Club<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I was already familiar with The PCABC<\/strong> from a flight I made to Ponca City<\/strong><\/a> in August of 2012. That day I had the great fortune of meeting Club Members\u00a0Dean & Pat Henson<\/strong> who were there that morning<\/strong> to do some cleaning up<\/strong>. They took me on a tour<\/strong> of The Club’s facility<\/strong> and I wrote a story<\/strong> about it you can see HERE<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Early Bird<\/h4>\n

I had heard about The Monthly Ponca City Fly-In<\/strong> for decades. Everybody talked it up and said it was great. The only “negative”<\/em> report I heard was from a guy who got there too late for breakfast<\/strong> (Now that I have had their breakfast, I can see why he was disappointed)<\/em>. In order not<\/strong> to miss<\/strong> the meal I determined to leave before Sunrise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Proof<\/p><\/div>\n

Surface Wind Was Deceiving<\/h4>\n

It is pretty much a constant<\/strong> that there will be winds aloft<\/strong> in Kansas. As I have written about HERE<\/strong><\/a>, though, the great majority<\/strong> of early mornings during The Flying Season<\/strong> are calm on the surface<\/strong>. Since my Ultralight<\/strong> cruises at 38 mph for best fuel conservation<\/strong>, I cannot go anywhere<\/strong> into headwind of 8 mph<\/strong> or higher with hope of getting there in reasonable time<\/strong> (or at all)<\/em>. To remedy this, I have found I can fly under a head wind<\/strong> early in the morning and then ride that wind back<\/strong> to base in the early afternoon. The trip home I call “Riding The Wave”. <\/em>Now you see why I call myself\u00a0The Sky Surfer<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

When heading South<\/strong> from my airfield I climb to 1,000′ AGL<\/strong> in order to pass over a number of homes<\/strong> that are in that area. The picture below is not very sharp<\/strong>\u00a0but I’m using it to demonstrate<\/strong> the phenomenon<\/strong> described above. At this moment my Ultralight’s airspeed is 40 mph<\/strong> but because of the headwind at 1,000′<\/strong> my ground speed is only 13.7 miles per hour!<\/strong> As soon as I passed over the houses, I dropped down to 75′ AGL<\/strong> (or lower)<\/em> for the rest of the trip and was able to maintain 35 to 40 mph<\/strong> across the ground.<\/p>\n

Riding The Rails<\/h4>\n

Approaching Belle Plaine, Kansas<\/strong><\/a>, I dropped down over this parked train<\/strong> at a siding. I had no other reason for doing this but to take the picture<\/strong>… The scene was still a little too dark<\/strong> for my camera to make it sharp<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

Countryside<\/h4>\n

Even though Belle Plaine<\/strong> is in a rural setting, things don’t begin to really thin out<\/strong> until\u00a0South<\/strong> of it. Here are some pictures<\/strong> of that area.<\/p>\n

Mere weeks ago this had been filled with water. Upon draining off it has left salt residue<\/strong> behind.<\/p><\/div>\n

As I popped up over a hedgerow<\/strong> I saw this storage building with a broken back<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Both Hands Occupied<\/h4>\n

As the morning<\/strong> progresses, the sun<\/strong> heats the earth<\/strong> causing\u00a0convection<\/strong> currents. At the same time, the wind aloft<\/strong> slowly drops<\/strong> to the surface<\/strong> of the earth. Both of these phenomena<\/strong> happened together<\/strong> rather early that morning and produced the requisite air turbulence<\/strong>. It was enough that I had to maintain “both hands on the wheel”<\/em> for a majority of the flight to Ponca<\/strong>. This kept me from taking more pictures. Arriving near the field I took one last shot<\/strong> before entering the pattern<\/strong>. A beautiful morning<\/strong> such as it was would be sure to draw<\/strong> many fliers<\/strong> and I wanted to make sure I eased into the air traffic flow<\/em> properly. I put my head<\/strong> in “swivel\u00a0mode”<\/em> and scoured<\/strong> the area for traffic as I entered downwind<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Through the haze<\/strong> you can see Ponca City Regional<\/strong> to the left<\/strong> and the huge tank farm<\/strong> on the photo horizon\u00a0South<\/strong> of the airport.<\/p><\/div>\n

Showtime!<\/h4>\n

As I taxied<\/strong> off the active I beheld a near\u00a0“Air Show”<\/em> atmosphere<\/strong>. There were loads of folks<\/strong> walking about the flight line<\/strong> looking at planes, taking pictures<\/strong> and enjoying the magnificent morning<\/strong>. I tried to take some photos<\/strong> of this action while taxing<\/strong> but frankly it didn’t work out too well. At the moment I had a “Follow Me”<\/strong> cart driver asking<\/strong> me where I wanted to park<\/strong> as well as “throttle and brake”<\/em> chores to handle<\/strong> with my hands<\/strong>. Sometimes\u00a0The Sky Surfer<\/strong> has to drop the camera<\/strong> and control the plane… Regardless, the one picture<\/strong> I did grab gives you a feel for that morning’s Fly-In Atmosphere<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tie Down<\/h4>\n

I found a primo spot<\/strong> on the grass right in front of The Club’s<\/strong> building. I pulled up and immediately<\/strong> set to securing my plane. It wasn’t all that windy<\/strong> but it is best to safety the MXL<\/strong> before you need to<\/span>. I have a pack above my seat back containing metal stakes<\/strong>, adjustable straps<\/strong> and a hammer<\/strong>. The hammer<\/strong> might seem out of place<\/strong>, but after numerous times<\/strong> searching for a suitable rock<\/strong> or attempting<\/strong> the “stomp method”<\/em>, inserting<\/strong>\u00a0stakes with a hammer<\/strong> is the only way to really<\/strong> get it done<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

While hustling around the Ultralight<\/strong> getting it secured<\/strong>, I was\u00a0besieged<\/strong>\u00a0with questions<\/strong> from townspeople<\/strong> and pilots<\/strong> alike. Right up there with flying<\/strong> and writing about his exploits<\/strong>, The Sky Surfer relishes<\/strong> an opportunity to ‘hold forth’<\/em> in a venu such as this. Non-pilots<\/strong> were amazed<\/strong> a thing like my Quicksilver MXL<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0could fly<\/strong>. Pilots<\/strong> were impressed<\/strong> I could fly it such a\u00a0distance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

One of the new friends<\/strong> I made that day was Floyd Cook<\/strong>. Floyd<\/strong> was very interested<\/strong> in my plane and The Flite Blog\u2122<\/strong>. Among many things he and I share in common is Conservative Political Values<\/strong>. Floyd<\/strong> is deeply involved in the Kay County Republican Party<\/strong><\/a>. He took the picture below of me regaling<\/strong> the assembled masses with tales of derring do<\/strong> (fanciful or true…)<\/em> and was kind enough to send<\/strong> it to me and allow<\/strong> it to be used<\/strong> in this report.<\/p>\n

Jerry Jackson – Hominy, Oklahoma<\/a><\/h4>\n

As I did my best to answer questions<\/strong> in the crowd I saw a familiar face. It was Jerry Jackson<\/strong>. I had met Jerry<\/strong> at the Hominy Airport<\/strong> when I made a flight there at the end of the 2012 Flying Season<\/strong>. I wrote about the trip HERE<\/strong><\/a>. That day he was replacing a bearing<\/strong> in the nose wheel<\/strong> of his Classic 1946 Ercoupe<\/a><\/strong>. I asked Jerry<\/strong> if he had flown it in and he said, “Yes!”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

It was time for me to get away from my plane to take some pictures of Jerry’s<\/strong> fine Ercoupe<\/strong>\u00a0and the other attendees. The Ercoupe<\/strong> would be Plane #1.<\/p>\n

The Star Of The Show<\/h4>\n

In addition to proximity to The Club Building<\/strong>, another reason I parked<\/strong> my plane where I did was to bask<\/strong> in the glory<\/strong> of the “SPAD-like”<\/em> Wolf W-11 Boredom Fighter<\/strong><\/a> seen below. It’s a design I had not seen<\/strong> one before<\/strong> and I like it a lot. My skill in aircraft building and repair is limited to hooking aluminum tubes<\/strong> together with AN hardware<\/strong> so I am impressed when someone can craft wood<\/strong> to this degree of excellence<\/strong>. I was not able to meet the owner.<\/p>\n

In 1928, Orland G. Corben<\/strong> released plans for what he called\u00a0“The First Homebuilt Airplane”<\/em>. This is the one\u00a0Merle Helt<\/strong> built. It is called a Baby Ace<\/strong><\/a>. We will meet Merle<\/strong> later in the report.<\/p><\/div>\n

Stan Sigle – Stillwater, Oklahoma<\/h4>\n

Stan<\/strong> is another new friend<\/strong> I have met in my Fun Flying<\/strong>. He has his own runway<\/strong> next to his home in Stillwater<\/strong><\/a>. Like me, Stan enjoys the “low and slow”<\/em> of Ultralight<\/strong> flying and he’s not afraid<\/strong> to get out of the pattern and venture<\/strong>. Because of some modifications he made to his Kitfox Lite<\/strong><\/a> that added significant weight, Stan decided to move it into the Experimental Category<\/strong><\/a>. I have added Stan’s place<\/strong> to my list of Fun Flights<\/strong> for next year.<\/p>\n

Eat Before It’s Too Late<\/h4>\n

As Stan<\/strong> and I walked about the airfield<\/strong> taking pictures<\/strong> and discussing airplane stuff<\/strong> it occurred to me that we might miss the breakfast<\/strong>. So we put the field tour<\/strong> on hold and hustled into The Club’s Dining Area<\/strong>. We were in the final group<\/strong> to be served.<\/p>\n

The breakfast served by The Ponca City Aviation Booster Club<\/strong> is not your average Fly-In Fare<\/strong>. Their kitchen is equipped<\/strong> like a restaurant<\/strong> and I suspect the volunteers<\/strong> cooking the food are from the professional sector<\/strong>. Everything tasted great<\/strong> and the value<\/strong> for the money paid<\/strong> is exceptional. Club Co-President Merle Helt<\/strong> told me the profit<\/strong> they make from the monthly breakfast<\/strong> goes to support their annual Youth Aviator Camp<\/strong>. As we stepped outside<\/strong> I grabbed the picture of a Cessna Citation<\/strong><\/a> taxiing past my MXL. Citations<\/strong> are built in Wichita, Kansas<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

As Stan <\/strong>and I watched the Citation <\/strong>taxi by he saw someone\u00a0he wanted me to meet<\/strong>. I was introduced to Merle Helt<\/strong>. Merle<\/strong> is very active in The Booster Club<\/strong> and currently shares the Presidency<\/strong>. I had shown his Fly Baby<\/strong> earlier but here we see it with Pilot\/Builder Merle Helt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Catchin’ The Wave<\/h4>\n

The surface wind<\/strong> was negligible<\/strong> but at 1,500′ AGL I picked up a good breeze<\/strong> from the South<\/strong>. The temperature<\/strong> was perfect<\/strong> there and the air was the smoothest<\/strong> so I stayed between 1-2,500′ AGL for the trip North<\/strong> to my home strip,\u00a0Selby Aerodrome<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

I have crossed the border to Kansas<\/strong>. This is The Flatland<\/strong>. The air<\/strong> was a bit hazy<\/strong> but everything was bright<\/strong>. From 1,700′ AGL looking Northwest<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Strother Air Field #2<\/h4>\n

Also known as\u00a0Strother South Auxiliary Army Airfield #5<\/strong><\/a>, this airfield was part of the enormous buildup<\/strong> of pilot training bases in Kansas<\/strong> during World War II<\/strong>. I have flown<\/strong> over and near it many times<\/strong>. I drove there<\/strong> once in order to shoot video of a Drag Race<\/strong>. You can see the music video<\/strong> I produced from that shoot HERE<\/strong><\/a>. I call it “What A Drag”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Seven miles Northwest of Arkansas City, Kansas<\/strong><\/a> is Geuda Springs<\/strong>. I have never been to this town but will next flying season<\/strong>. I just read that there are a number of fast producing Salt Springs<\/strong> there. NOW<\/strong> I know why I see the\u00a0salt flats<\/strong> around there!<\/p>\n

Salt Washes<\/h4>\n

Now that I know about the Salt Springs<\/strong> near Geuda Springs<\/strong>, this next area makes sense to me. I have passed over it many times<\/strong>. It is 3 miles Northwest<\/strong> of Geuda. In 2011 and 2012 during the drought,<\/strong> it was completely dry. Now that rain<\/strong> has returned<\/strong> to the area, there is standing water but it is obviously high salt content. I took these pictures from 1,800′ AGL.<\/p>\n

…but they have a nice pool to cool off on a hot day like it was!<\/p><\/div>\n

Southeast of Belle Plaine, Kansas<\/strong>, I noticed another field with about a third damaged.<\/p><\/div>\n

Because of the standing water still evident in the damaged area, I suspect the crop suffered from too much rain.<\/p><\/div>\n

A Long Train<\/strong> Heading South<\/strong> After Passing On The South<\/strong> Side Of\u00a0Mulvane, Kansas<\/a><\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

On the home stretch to Selby Aerodrome<\/strong> I see these patterns in the crops. I believe this reveals the water<\/strong>\u00a0retention capability <\/strong>of\u00a0<\/strong>the\u00a0different soils in these fields. Standing water hurts the roots and I think that is what happened in the yellow areas.<\/p><\/div>\n

I have been trying to get a shot like this<\/strong> for a long time. In it we can see both airfields<\/strong> and their proximity. The photo<\/strong> was taken about 10 miles South<\/strong> of Selby<\/strong> at 1,800′ AGL.<\/p><\/div>\n

Good tailwind<\/strong> assistance all the way home. The wind sock<\/strong> tells the story.<\/p><\/div>\n

I had a good morning<\/strong> at the Fly-In<\/strong>. If you live in the region<\/strong>, I suggest you to fly to Ponca<\/strong>\u00a0any first Saturday of the Month<\/span> – for The PCABC Fly-In<\/strong>. You will like it.<\/p>\n
