If At First You Don’t Succeed…<\/h4>\n

Those of you who follow The Sky Surfer’s<\/strong> exploits know that I attempted a flight to Ellinwood, Kansas<\/strong><\/a> on 18 May<\/strong> of this year (the story is HERE<\/strong><\/a>). It was not a complete success<\/em>. A variety of issues forced me to abort the mission and head back home. This was a “first” for me but I guess all records count for something…<\/p>\n

Keeping My Ear To The Ground (Sky?)<\/h4>\n

On the 27th of June<\/strong>, my Lovely Wife<\/strong> and I were returning from Denver<\/strong>. We had spent a few days with our Daughter<\/strong> and her Husband<\/strong>\u00a0sightseeing and to watch his graduation<\/strong> from Tech School<\/strong> (see a video of his team’s\u00a0Robo-Guitar<\/strong> HERE<\/strong><\/a>). We had a great time. During the eight hour drive back to Wichita<\/strong> that Friday,<\/strong> I asked Debra<\/strong>\u00a0to check the weather report<\/strong> for the next day. I had only made one flight in June<\/strong> and was ready to Hit The Surf\u00a0<\/strong>before the month was out. Usually during Summer<\/strong> in Kansas<\/strong> the winds are from the Southwest<\/strong>\u00a0(We children of the ’70’s<\/em> all know this from Kansas’<\/strong><\/a> tune “People of the South Wind<\/strong><\/a>” written about the Kaw Indians<\/strong><\/a> from whom the name for The State of\u00a0Kansas<\/strong> is taken). Anyway, as I directed our car down\u00a0I-70<\/strong>, she utilized her iPhone<\/strong> to check the forecast. When she reported the wind on Saturday<\/strong> was to be from the Northwest<\/span>,<\/strong> I knew vindication was at hand!<\/span>\u00a0The stinging defeat I had suffered in the middle of May<\/strong> had been ever-present<\/em> in my mind. With winds typically switching South<\/strong> at the end of May<\/strong>, I faced the prospect of carrying this burden of defeat<\/strong> for six months or more until Northerly<\/strong> winds resumed. This untimely turn of atmospheric events<\/strong> changed everything!<\/em>\u00a0In the morning I would attempt the run to<\/strong> Ellinwood – again<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Take To The High Way<\/h4>\n

Since the Middle Ages<\/strong>, the term “highway”<\/em> has meant a primary road<\/strong> between cities or towns. With the\u00a0advent of the motorcar<\/strong>, its meaning has changed to mean any road of substantial surface<\/strong>\u00a0inside a big city or urban area as well as a connector conveying traffic between towns<\/strong>, cities<\/strong>, metro areas<\/strong> and States<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I see it a different way. My “High Way”<\/em> is a point of view<\/strong> rather than a surface<\/strong>. It’s a way of seeing and experiencing<\/strong> the countryside without<\/strong> signals, crossings, traffic lights, traffic…\u00a0<\/em>Floating like a butterfly over an endless and ever-changing magical landscape… No windshield – a thousand aromas, constantly changing temperature and humidity. I rise higher when I want to see farther or to cross tree lines. I drop back down just above the surface to glide in “ground effect<\/a>“<\/em>. A solo activity. No radio. No conversation. Quite often not thinking about anything<\/strong> other than just being one with the air<\/strong>. In many ways<\/strong>, far less demanding than driving a car but, by the same token, absolute <\/strong>in\u00a0its particular requirements.<\/p>\n

(Hmmmm…. Having said all this, do I now call those long strips of concrete and asphalt ground-pounders drive their wheeled vehicles upon “Low Ways”?)<\/em><\/p>\n

Ellinwood<\/strong> was a great\u00a0“High Way”<\/em> trip. In this next series of pictures you will see what I saw<\/strong> as I saw it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Just after takeoff about 1\/2 mile West of Selby Aerodrome<\/strong><\/a> at 800′ AGL looking West<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Only 5 minutes from takeoff looking Northwest<\/strong> from 1,000′ AGL. The sky is clear with only a slight yellow haze<\/strong> evident close to the ground – probably pollen!<\/p><\/div>\n

Rucker Field<\/a> Directly Ahead<\/strong>. This is from 1,000′ AGL looking West<\/strong>. The radio<\/strong> antenna<\/strong> at the North<\/strong> end of Rucker<\/strong> is\u00a0on the edge of the control zone<\/strong> for Mid Continent Airport<\/strong>. That makes the field a convenient marker<\/strong> for me to keep out of their airspace<\/strong> when heading\u00a0North<\/strong> or Northwest<\/strong> from Selby<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Just past Rucker Field<\/strong> I look North<\/strong> to take this shot. The shadows<\/strong> of a couple hundred round bales<\/strong> of hay give 3 dimensional interest to a large field.<\/p><\/div>\n

Better Plan This Time<\/h4>\n

The direct path to Ellinwood, Kansas<\/strong> from my field, Selby Aerodrome<\/strong><\/a> would take me directly over Mid Continent Airport<\/strong>. I could actually do this but would have to climb so high<\/strong> to get over the traffic area<\/strong> it would not be an efficient use of fuel. So I always go around it. On my first foray to Ellinwood<\/strong>, I cut between Mid Continent’s traffic zone<\/strong> and the town of Goddard<\/strong><\/a>. Because there has been so much suburban building taking place Northeast<\/strong> of Goddard<\/strong>, I had to maintain 1,000′ of altitude<\/strong>. This slowed me down in the headwind<\/strong> that day and was part of the reason<\/strong> I could not make the journey. This time I cut to the West<\/strong> of Goddard<\/strong> where there is not as much habitation and I could stay low. For a marker I picked the Dillons Grocery Store Warehouse<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Just after passing the Dillons Warehouse<\/strong>, I crossed Hwy 50<\/del> Hwy 54<\/strong>\u00a0(an “Eagle Eye Award” to Brother Stan Holmes for catching this error)<\/em> which crosses Wichita East<\/strong> and West<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Getting Down To Business<\/h4>\n

After passing Highway 50<\/strong> the landscape cleared out dramatically. I dropped down to “wheat top level”<\/em> and went into cruise mode.<\/p>\n

Hutchinson, Kansas And The Sunflower Aerodrome<\/h4>\n

After flying approximately an hour, I was Southwest<\/strong> of Hutchinson, Kansas<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>home of a Jewel on The Prairie<\/strong> – The\u00a0Kansas Cosmosphere<\/strong><\/a>. On the Southwest<\/strong> edge of “Hutch”<\/em> is the remainder of the WWII Naval Air Station Hutchinson<\/strong>. In addition to now being an industrial site, these old runways are the home of “Soar Kansas<\/a>“<\/strong>. They call their part of the field The Sunflower Aerodrome Gliderport<\/strong><\/a>. Powered Parachutes<\/strong> also fly from that field and that morning I saw one off to my Northeast<\/strong>. In the 1990’s, I produced a documentary<\/strong> called “A Beginner’s Guide to Powered Parachutes”<\/strong> that did quite well. You can read about it HERE<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Buzz Not!<\/h4>\n

Approaching Highway 50<\/strong> I maintained 500′ AGL<\/strong> so I could make sure not to pass too low<\/strong> over any cars or trucks that might be on it at that time. No one was near so after crossing over I dropped back down to cruising altitude<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Leg Stretch<\/h4>\n

Of great advantage to The Sky Surfer<\/strong> is the potential for landing just about anywhere<\/strong> in “The Flatlands”<\/em>. Sure, there are a few places you can’t land<\/em> but they are far outnumbered by the places you can. I had been airborne for about two hours and decided to take a break. I found a perfect fallow field, off by itself. After making a low pass, I circled back and touched down. I like to make stops like this to experience the peace, quiet and majestic beauty of The Great Plains<\/a><\/strong>. The people who live out here are quite fortunate indeed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Twin Towers Of A Different Sort<\/h4>\n

Unfortunately since September 11, 2001<\/strong>, any mention of “Twin Towers”<\/em> evokes images of mayhem perpetrated upon My<\/strong> Nation<\/strong> by evildoers using aircraft as murder weapons. This day, though, it seems the appropriate term<\/strong> to describe what I am approaching. I have seen this type of antenna<\/strong> before. Knowing a little bit\u00a0about radio waves, I suspect the design either concentrates the waves in a particular direction or provides for a larger earth footprint (or both)\u00a0<\/em>without having to build as high. Anybody\u00a0knowledgeable in these matters<\/strong>, please let me know.<\/p>\n

Suddenly I come upon a field speckled with a Kansas Symbol<\/strong> – Wild Sunflowers<\/strong><\/a>!<\/p><\/div>\n

Constant Change<\/h4>\n

While earlier alluding to this\u00a0countryside<\/strong>\u00a0as “The Flatlands”<\/em>, I don’t want to create an image of “boring sameness”. It is anything but that. As I approach Ellinwood<\/strong> I skirt the Northeast<\/strong> edge of Quivira National Wildlife Refuge<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

KARD TV 3<\/h4>\n

In the 1980’s<\/strong> I was a Cameraman at KARD-TV3 (now KSNW) in Wichita<\/strong>. Back then, local affiliates still produced original programming<\/strong> other than just “News” Shows. I was fortunate to be part of the station’s documentary unit. We did a “doc” on the Quivira Refuge<\/strong> so I had been here in those days. We covered the marshland<\/strong> that the migratory birds<\/strong> use. It is quite extensive<\/strong> and NOT a place I would cross in my Ultralight<\/strong> because an “engine out” landing there would probably result in a the loss of the plane. The ground is wet all the time<\/strong> and the mud particularly sticky<\/strong>. I suspect a plane stuck in that stuff would have to be abandoned or taken apart piece by piece<\/strong> to be\u00a0retrieved.<\/p>\n

Unique<\/h4>\n

Anyway, the landscape<\/strong> you will see in this next series of photos is about 9 miles Southeast of Ellinwood<\/strong> and like no other area<\/strong> in Kansas<\/strong> I have seen thus far. The dead trees<\/strong> make it quite eerie. That day, other than a few deer, I was the only one there.<\/p>\n

The dense bush-like vegetation<\/strong> in the foreground reminded me of something called “gorse<\/a>“<\/strong><\/em> that grows wild on the coast of Oregon<\/strong><\/a>. Out there it would scratch your car<\/strong> really bad if you drove too close to it.<\/p><\/div>\n

Even though I couldn’t see it yet I knew I was close to Ellinwood<\/strong>. The tree line with the drilling rig in my path required me to gain altitude<\/strong> and that’s when I saw it.<\/p>\n

Rising Headwind<\/h4>\n

Having climbed to the altitude you see in this series of photos, put me in the slowly building<\/strong>\u00a020 mph Northwest Headwind<\/strong>. This slowed my progress dramatically. The timing was perfect, though, as I would have an excellent tailwind for the ride home.<\/p>\n

One Sheet To The Wind (Conclusion)<\/h4>\n

Earlier I alluded to a sheet over my knees<\/strong> in a photo. In the picture below you see said sheet. Here is the back story:<\/p>\n

While we had been having unseasonably cool and rainy weather<\/strong> from May<\/strong> through June<\/strong> in Kansas<\/strong>, temperatures had inched up to the 80’s by the Ellinwood Flight<\/strong>. I do my best to plan these missions<\/strong> but in readying for the Ellinwood Flight<\/strong> I had forgotten one of my Cardinal Rules<\/strong> – The Attire Rule:\u00a0Always “over-dress”<\/em> when flying an open cockpit<\/strong> Ultralight<\/strong>. Arriving at the hangar early that morning I was dressed in shorts<\/strong> and a t-shirt<\/strong>. This would be excellent<\/strong> for the return journey<\/strong> in the heat of the afternoon but deadly at sunrise<\/strong>. Even though it was about 68 degrees on the ground<\/strong> I knew from experience it could (would?)<\/em> be chilly in the air<\/strong>. The 20 minute drive back to my house was out of the question. It was either freeze or find a solution<\/strong>. I trolled around the hangar<\/strong> looking for something to cover myself from the inevitable, early morning 40 mph<\/strong>\u00a0wind (chill)<\/em> blast<\/strong>. All I could find was a bed sheet that had been used as a painting drop cloth<\/strong>. Shaking it to dislodge any spiders,<\/strong> I took it out. Once the engine\u00a0was running, I draped the sheet over my knees and upper torso<\/strong> and then buckled my seat and knee belts over it.<\/strong> I’m really glad I did this because it cut the chill<\/strong>\u00a0just enough<\/strong> to make the flight very pleasant.<\/p>\n

The Prairie Sheik (Sheet?)<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Time To Explore<\/strong><\/p>\n

My plan for Ellinwood<\/strong>, was to secure my MXL <\/strong>to what tie downs I could find, grab the two empty fuel tanks<\/strong> I keep behind my seat and head into town with camera<\/strong> “at the ready”<\/em>. As shown previously, there were three vehicles<\/strong> at the field. I went to the yellow building<\/strong> to see if anyone was there to show me any permanent tie downs they might have ’cause I didn’t see any. No one was there. Because the wind was gaining velocity<\/strong> by the minute, I tied my Quicksilver’s tail<\/strong>\u00a0to a steel pole fence – tail into the wind<\/span>. Then I broke out the tie down stakes<\/strong> I carry behind the seat and pounded them into the ground – to affix the tie downs I also carry with me – to the wings. Everything was now secure. Since it was in the direction<\/strong> of my intended travel, I walked to the hangar with two trucks parked next to it. The door was open<\/strong> so I knocked and stepped in to a wonderland<\/strong> of Phillips 66 memorabilia<\/strong> and the company of Ken Lebbin<\/strong> and Robert Yarmer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

An Interesting Find<\/h4>\n

I introduced myself and realized they had not heard my arrival due to the noise of a powerful fan<\/strong> that was running. This is Ken’s hangar<\/strong>. Ken<\/strong> and his Father<\/strong> before him had been Phillips Service Station Owners<\/strong>. He was showing Robert<\/strong> some of his memorabilia <\/strong>that morning. As we would discover soon thereafter Ken’s collection<\/strong> would soon be increased.\u00a0“Photo Op”<\/em> signals went off in my mind so I asked Ken<\/strong> if I could take some pictures. He said “Fine”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Here Ken<\/strong> shows some of the neat artifacts<\/strong> he has including two examples of the helmets<\/strong> worn by Army Helicopter Pilots<\/strong>. The one on the left is VietNam<\/strong> era and was worn by Ken<\/strong> during his tour of VietNam<\/strong>. The one on the right – an\u00a0Iraq<\/strong> era helmet was worn by his son David<\/strong> during his tour there – Quite a Legacy!<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

When Ken<\/strong> had invited Robert<\/strong> over to his hangar to show him his artifacts that Saturday<\/strong>, Robert<\/strong>\u00a0was looking forward to the opportunity but also had a secret agenda in mind<\/strong>. While I was standing there he asked if\u00a0Ken<\/strong>\u00a0would be interested in a couple more<\/em>\u00a0Items of <\/strong>Aviation<\/strong>\u00a0Interest\u00a0for his collection<\/strong>. After hearing what they were, Ken<\/strong> happily agreed to take them off Robert’s hands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Robert Yarmer<\/strong> hands Ken Lebbin<\/strong> a famous propeller<\/strong>. The person Robert<\/strong> got it from told him it came off a Curtis Jenny<\/strong><\/a>! No doubt from back in the barnstorming era<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

\u00a0A Relic From World War II<\/h4>\n

The other item Robert<\/strong> was to give Ken<\/strong> that morning was stored in a container<\/strong> in town. They asked if I would like to go with them to get it. Ken<\/strong> said he could take me by the gas station, too.<\/p>\n

A retired builder of homes<\/strong>, Robert<\/strong> still has things from his former construction business<\/strong> (Strobel\/Yarmer<\/strong>)<\/em> stored in some metal buildings<\/strong> and a shipping<\/strong>\u00a0container<\/strong>. The artifact<\/strong> was in the container.<\/p>\n

They proceded to roll out…<\/p><\/div>\n

Time To Tour The Town<\/h4>\n

Ken<\/strong> was liking the idea of my Flight Blog Story<\/strong> and wanted to help. He said he would take me around town<\/strong> to see\u00a0points of interest<\/strong>. What a deal!<\/strong> It sure beat walking and<\/span> included a Native Ellinwood<\/strong>\u00a0Tour Guide<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Lutheran Church<\/strong> I showed earlier from the air (St. John’s)<\/em>. Another great example of the Stone Buildings<\/strong> found in many small Kansas<\/strong> towns.<\/p><\/div>\n

Prairie Tunnels<\/h4>\n

As with a number of Prairie Towns<\/strong>, there are tunnels<\/strong> under the surface of Ellinwood.<\/strong> Because of time limitation, I was not able to take the tour<\/strong>\u00a0– but you can. To learn more<\/strong> or to reserve a tour go HERE<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

This is the same block as featured above but as seen from the South. The building on corner in the foreground, called The Dick Building<\/strong>, is where the Underground Tours<\/strong> begin.<\/p><\/div>\n

Across from the Dick Building<\/strong> is this fine example in brick. It is to be “returned” into being a hotel. Originally it was The Wolf Hotel.<\/strong>\u00a0Over time it became a bank<\/strong>, then City Hall<\/strong>, then an Antique Store<\/strong>. The owner’s desire now is for it to once again be a Hotel<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Legion In Action<\/h4>\n

Ken<\/strong> served in the U.S. Army<\/strong><\/a> as an Air Traffic Controller<\/strong><\/a> and is a member of The American Legion<\/strong><\/a>. His Post refurbished the historic Santa Fe Ellinwood Train Station<\/strong> you see below. They use it for meetings.<\/p>\n

Limestone Fence Posts<\/h4>\n

Wood was scarce in Kansas<\/strong> during the settlement era. Creative people used the area’s\u00a0abundant limestone<\/strong> to make fence posts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Wheat Shocks<\/h4>\n

Local artist Ray Nienke<\/strong> welded all the Wheat Shocks<\/strong> you see in the photo below decorating the light poles. A nice touch. There are also very large ones<\/strong> at the Highway 96<\/strong> entrance to town on the East<\/strong> and West<\/strong> sides. Unfortunately at the time of this visit<\/strong> both of them were down for refurbishment<\/strong> so I could not show them to you but you can see a photo of one on their website HERE<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Choppy Air<\/h4>\n

After the tour of the town, Ken<\/strong> and I had a burger at John Henry’s<\/strong> on Santa Fe Boulevard<\/strong>. By the way, it was the best burger<\/strong> I have had since I can remember – a benefit to dining in Cattle Country<\/strong>. That was the good thing. The “bad thing” (and it wasn’t that bad…)<\/em> is that we were having such a good time talking about airplanes and such that time slipped away<\/em>. Typically I would have egressed by 11:30 am or Noon. By the time we returned to the airport at 2 pm, the conditions were very gusty<\/strong>. When I took to the air, wind was from the North at 10 mph gusting to 27 mph<\/strong>. This is what I call “Choppy Air”<\/em>. It is not the speed<\/strong> (27 mph)<\/em> but the disparity<\/strong> between the constant air and the gusts. In this case that disparity was 17 mph<\/strong>. That makes for a “bucking bronco”<\/em> ride. But, hey, if you can direct the bronco<\/strong>, he will get you there sooner. With this strong tailwind<\/strong> I was able to fly non-stop back to Selby Aerodrome<\/strong> arriving with lots of gas left<\/strong> in the tank.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>

After takeoff I leaned out and took this picture of Ellinwood Muni<\/strong>. You can see Ken Lebbin<\/strong> standing near his pickup. This is from 200′ AGL<\/strong> looking Southwest<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

The Dust Of A Thousand Combines<\/h4>\n

On the flight up I suggested that you take note of the many fields<\/strong> I flew over that had already been gleaned of their wheat<\/strong>. Now on the return flight<\/strong> I will show you that was just a start. I estimate to have seen 100 combines busy cutting wheat as I returned from Ellinwood<\/strong> that day.<\/p>\n

Because of the extensive cloud cover<\/strong>, the conditions for cutting wheat<\/strong> were\u00a0favorable<\/strong> because the shadowing<\/strong> of the clouds lowered the temperature<\/strong>. I was happy for them in this regard but unfortunately<\/strong> that lighting condition is not auspicious<\/strong> for aerial photography<\/strong>. It produces a “flat”<\/em> look,\u00a0lacking contrast<\/strong>. Nonetheless, I took a number of pictures so you could see what Kansas Wheat Harvest 2013<\/strong> looked like from the air. It was very impressive.<\/p>\n

First Things First<\/h4>\n

Before getting to The Harvest<\/strong>, there were some interesting “reverse views”<\/em> of things I photographed on the trip up. Here’s\u00a0another look<\/strong> from a different angle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A combine with a waiting wheat truck. The trick in this business is to keep the combine moving while cutting. Wheat trucks need to be ready when the combine’s hopper is full. They then pull up next to the combine and offload on the run.<\/p><\/div>\n

A Combine<\/strong> gets its name from the way it “combines”<\/em> three processes at once: Reaping, Threshing and Winnowing<\/strong>. The dust<\/strong> seen to the right of the machine is that cast off in the\u00a0Winnowing.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

This meadow is being put to productive use for growing wheat and hunting deer.<\/p><\/div>\n

Rays of sunshine began to break through. A couple of miles ahead you can spot the combine<\/strong> in the center of the photo.<\/p><\/div>\n

These guys are getting ready to perform a rolling transfer<\/strong>. The combine<\/strong> will not stop reaping<\/strong> while it unloads<\/strong> its wheat to the transport<\/strong>. Once the transfer is completed<\/strong>, the transport vehicle<\/strong> will speed away to unload<\/strong> the wheat and return.<\/p><\/div>\n

Fields – Some Harvested – Some Yet To Be<\/p><\/div>\n

Here a transport vehicle offloads to a Semi-Truck Trailer. The folks near the pickups waved enthusiastically as I passed over.<\/p><\/div>\n

Something has negatively affected the wheat in two spots of this large field. The combine leaves it be.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>

Until the first time I flew over a combine in action I did not realize this. From here you can see the open hopper on top<\/strong> where the grain is held before transfer. The grain hopper is not evident when a combine is viewed from ground level.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

No Coincidence<\/h4>\n

The rich bounty continuously flowing from what is called The American Breadbasket<\/strong> is no accident. I personally know people who live and raise crops and cattle<\/strong> in the area you have just “flown” over<\/strong> by viewing these photos. They are members<\/strong> of my Church<\/strong>. I have visited their farm on many occasions. They represent a significant majority<\/strong> in this region all having\u00a0one unifying and<\/strong>\u00a0defining characteristic<\/strong> – they are Followers of Jesus<\/strong>. Without going into a long\u00a0dissertation\u00a0 let it be understood that Jesus came to help us have an abundant life<\/strong> (John 10:10)<\/em>. Sure, there will be problems and trials<\/strong> but overall the Christian Life is one of Abundance – Spiritual, Familial, Social, and Economic<\/strong>. In a nutshell, this is the secret of America’s<\/strong> success over the past 200+ years<\/strong>. To the extent a remnant<\/strong> (the size of which is known only to God)<\/em> has followed and continues to follow Jesus<\/strong> our fortunes rise and fall as a nation.<\/p>\n

Quartering Tailwind<\/h4>\n

Even though a tailwind is always a help<\/strong>, if it is not<\/strong> directly from behind<\/strong> the aircraft you have to continually make adjustments<\/strong> to “cut across it”<\/em>. Since my general heading<\/strong> was Southeast<\/strong>, the North Wind<\/strong> was constantly pushing me off course. Regardless of my efforts I would drift from time to time so my path home was not over the same track<\/strong>. This time when crossing Highway 96<\/strong> I saw this large greenhouse operation<\/strong> I had not seen before.<\/p>\n

I am always intrigued by the work linemen<\/strong> do to bring electricity to our communities. Much of the type of line work shown below is done out in the country where most of us never see it.
