So, I was grounded during that time unable to lift skyward and journey out. Sunday after <strong>Church<\/strong>, though, the weather completely cleared up and was superb. <strong>Kansas in the Spring<\/strong> is a constantly changing weather environment. For instance, the day before I wrote this story it was a &#8220;short sleeve T-Shirt&#8221; 68 degrees at 8 am. By the late afternoon the wind had come around to the North and brought the temperature down to the 30&#8217;s that evening. Sometimes the temperature will change dramatically in minutes. This\u00a0volatility makes Kansas part of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tornado_Alley\">Tornado Alley<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, <strong>Sunday<\/strong> my moment had arrived. The yard work was done. I had no deadlines to complete for my business <em>(<strong>The Sky Surfer<\/strong> has to work to support this flying habit)<\/em>. I grabbed my <strong>Flying Gear<\/strong> and headed to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airnav.com\/airport\/35KS\">Selby Aerodrome<\/a> to do some aviating. For a change I had decided there was no need to document the flight for posterity. The previous week I had put considerable effort into writing down everything I saw, thought or heard or was told on my flight to <a href=\"http:\/\/fitzvideo.com\/skysurfing2\/2013\/04\/26\/a-flight-to-historic-perry-oklahoma\/\">Perry, Oklahoma<\/a>. This <strong>Sunday Flight<\/strong> was to be <em>&#8220;casual&#8221;<\/em>. Little did I know this was not to be.<\/p>\n<p>Circumstances changed and that is why I bring you this <strong>sad report<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<h4>Destination Udall, Kansas<\/h4>\n<p>Sometimes when making a casual, &#8220;no destination&#8221; flight, I just take off and &#8220;ease South&#8221;. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcconnell.af.mil\/\">McConnell Air Force Base<\/a> is North Northeast of our field and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flywichita.org\/\">Mid Continent Airport<\/a> is North Northwest of it. So, with two controlled airspaces to the North my <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">initial direction of flight<\/span> is always from 90 to 270 degrees. For me, <em>the raison\u00a0d&#8217;\u00eatre<\/em>\u00a0for Sport Flying is to get into the air &#8211; destinations are icing on the cake. Often I just cruise the area for an hour or so and then come back to the field and land. Other times my <strong>Fun Flying<\/strong> will include landing at one or more of the <strong>uncontrolled airfields<\/strong> around the <em>&#8220;neighborhood&#8221;<\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airnav.com\/airport\/KEGT\">Wellington Municipal<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airnav.com\/airport\/K50\">Cook Field<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airnav.com\/airport\/18KS\">Cherokee Strip<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airnav.com\/airport\/4KS7\">Butler Airpark<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airnav.com\/airport\/60KS\">Alley Field<\/a>\u00a0are part of that zone. <strong>Cherokee Strip<\/strong> and <strong>Alley Field<\/strong> are the most fun places to stop because I know guys at these fields. If they are around I can see what they have been doing lately. <strong>Last Sunday<\/strong> I decided to fly\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fitzvideo.com\/skysurfing2\/2013\/02\/09\/a-shakedown-and-the-southern-triangle-brian-fitzgerald\/\">&#8220;The Southern Triangle<\/a>&#8220;. I opened the flight into the South wind that had brought the good weather into town. This would eventually take me to <strong>Cherokee Strip<\/strong>. Then I would head downwind to <strong>Alley Field<\/strong> and then crosswind back to <strong>Selby Aerodrome<\/strong>. My <strong>GPS<\/strong> showed the wind to be a little higher down South but it was no big deal. Regardless, as you can see above, after arriving I parked my <strong>MXL<\/strong> on the North side of <strong>Tommy&#8217;s<\/strong> business <em>(Ranco Custom Products)<\/em> to stay in the <em>&#8220;wind shadow&#8221;<\/em>. I did this because there are no tie downs there and I didn&#8217;t want my plane to &#8220;walk away&#8221; while I was inside. Tommy has a railing at the front of his business. It reminds me of the ones <strong>Cowboys<\/strong> used to tie their horses to in <strong>The\u00a0Old West<\/strong>\u00a0before stepping into a saloon.\u00a0<strong>Tommy<\/strong> is a busy guy. About <strong>75% of the time<\/strong> I drop into <strong>Cherokee Strip<\/strong> he is not there. Today was <strong>part of<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>the other 25 percent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Special Project Inside<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Tommy<\/strong> heard me land and came out. After I shut &#8216;er down and we shook hands he told me to follow him to see what they were working on. It was a <strong>1950 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kaiserwillys.com\/\">Willys<\/a> Hot Rod<\/strong>. I like <strong>Hot Rods<\/strong> and <strong>American Muscle Cars<\/strong>. <em>(A couple years back I produced a documentary about them called <a href=\"http:\/\/fitzvideo.com\/pages\/ThunderPages\/Thunder.html\">&#8220;Decade of Thunder&#8221;<\/a>. I put some cuts from it on YouTube. When it is finished <strong>Dennis<\/strong> will be giving it to his daughter <strong>Courtnie<\/strong> to race at the drags. <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Nice Present<\/span><\/strong>!<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Tommy Shows His Restored Harley<\/h4>\n<p>As we headed out so I could work on <em>my<\/em>\u00a0&#8220;project&#8221;, <strong>Tommy<\/strong> stopped to show me another one of <em>his<\/em> projects &#8211; a <strong>Harley<\/strong> re-build. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guide-to-golf-carts.com\/harley-davidson-golf-carts.html\"><strong>Harley Davidson Golf Kart<\/strong><\/a>, that is. I didn&#8217;t know there was such a thing. He has a place for everything now.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0Now A Sad Lesson About Cutting Corners In Aviation<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Anyone who has earned their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pilotratings.com\/\">Private Pilot Rating<\/a> or any ensuing aviation tickets knows that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">shortcuts are to be avoided<\/span>. <strong>Flight Instructors<\/strong> harp on this constantly. &#8220;The day you don&#8217;t check for water in the fuel will be the day your engine cuts out on takeoff &#8211; with trees ahead.&#8221; or &#8220;The day you don&#8217;t do a proper pre-flight will be the day you take off with the control lock still on your elevator.&#8221; or &#8221; The day you don&#8217;t pull carb heat while\u00a0descending\u00a0will be the day ice covers your carburator, your engine quits, and you dead stick into the middle of town.&#8221; etc. etc&#8230; I could go on but you get the point. We have all been warned about taking shortcuts. \u00a0There Is No Excuse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Well, I confess, I took a shortcut and had to pay the price. The results of this completely avoidable lapse in judgment <em>(gross laziness?)<\/em> are contained in the photos below. <strong>The Sky Surfer was humbled and brought low<\/strong>. Escaping with my life in spite of committing the monumental error of <strong><em>&#8220;corner cutting&#8221;<\/em><\/strong>, I felt duty bound to the <strong>Flying Community<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(and others who contemplate taking up the noble calling of Aviation)<\/em> to share my regrettable incident in the hope that they might save themselves this\u00a0<strong>ignominy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It all started just after landing at <strong>Cherokee Strip<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>could<\/em><\/span> have taxied over to <strong>Tommy Randall&#8217;s<\/strong> place like everyone else does &#8211; like <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">I have done many times before<\/span>. But, no, in the pattern I had seen <strong>Tommy&#8217;s<\/strong> front door open and was in a big hurry to see what he was doing in the shop. This nice, flat field looked innocent when treated to a casual glance&#8230; The ruts left after &#8220;the incident&#8221; appear insignificant.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Incredibly, Sticky, Cement-Like MUD<\/h4>\n<p>At first as I took <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the shortcut<\/span> to Tommy&#8217;s front door it didn&#8217;t &#8220;click&#8221; why the <strong>Quicksilver<\/strong> had suddenly <strong>ground to a halt<\/strong>. My first impulse was that the slightly rising grade had slowed my momentum. I did the first thing that comes to mind <strong><em>&#8220;Give it more power!&#8221;<\/em><\/strong>. That sort of worked. I started inching forward but felt a strange &#8220;loping&#8221; movement like a turtle wobbling from side to side when it pulls itself across the ground. Both main wheels were like this.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Decision Time<\/h4>\n<p>Finally\u00a0<strong>my lightning fast mind<\/strong>\u00a0realized the predicament into which I had put myself. By then it was too late to turn out of the mud pit and, not being a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.af.mil\/information\/factsheets\/factsheet.asp?id=86\">C-17 Globemaster<\/a>, I couldn&#8217;t back up. My perceived options were to <em>&#8220;power through it&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0or get out and push the <strong>MXL<\/strong> out of the mud. From the picture above you will see why I had no interest in putting my shoes in that. About then\u00a0<strong>Tommy<\/strong> appeared on the edge of the morass grinning and gently shaking his head. He wasn&#8217;t walking out in that stuff either.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the <strong><em>&#8220;power method&#8221;<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0eventually worked to get me out of the mud, it took <strong>about two minutes to travel 10 yards<\/strong>. I was very worried that if I got going too fast I would throw one or more of those rocks into my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powerfin.com\/\">PowerFin Prop<\/a> and ruin it.
