Around the middle of August the town of Halstead, Kansas<\/a>, holds their annual Old Settlers\u2019 Day.\u00a0\u00a0In conjunction with that, the Mid-America Antique Airplane Group<\/a> holds their annual Fly-In at Wiebe Field, Halstead\u2019s official airport.\u00a0\u00a0Some thirty planes showed up this year.\u00a0\u00a0They ranged from a T-6<\/p>\n

to a Midget Mustang<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

and all manner of planes in between.\u00a0\u00a0Some very interesting planes there were a Mooney M20A.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

This was the last of the wood wing and wood tailed Mooneys.\u00a0\u00a0Your author was instrumental in designing the M20B which converted the plane to all metal.<\/p>\n

Also attending was Ed & Charlotte Doyle from Manhattan; KS, in their PA-18<\/a>-105 Special with its huge tires.\u00a0\u00a0Ed regularly competes in the Valdez STOL Competition in Alaska<\/div>\n

But I can\u2019t let this article go by without alluding to the airplane that got me<\/em><\/strong> going in EAA.\u00a0\u00a0In the early sixties I read a book written by Pete Bowers about his designing and building the Fly Baby<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I later met Pete in Seattle where he was member of that chapter.\u00a0\u00a0(He looked a lot older than his picture on the book cover.)\u00a0\u00a0Well, lo and behold, there was a Fly Baby there at the Fly-In.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

It was this plane that got me interested in The Experimental Aircraft Association<\/a> and that association continues to this very\u00a0day. (I should have bought a lifetime membership then, but $200 was big money at that time.)<\/p>\n

The day started at 7:30 am with the ubiquitous pancake and sausage breakfast.\u00a0 Around 10:00 am the planes began to line up so that they could make a pass over the Old Settlers parade route – fastest planes first so that they wouldn’t run over the slower planes.<\/p>\n

About 11:30 a pickup hauling a big smoker pulled up with a great selection of pulled pork, sliced brisket and chopped brisket for our lunch.\u00a0 Everyone enjoyed a great lunch.<\/p>\n
