Most all of\u00a0The Sky Surfer’s\u00a0stories\u00a0<\/strong>develop\u00a0after reviewing<\/strong> the pictures and notes taken during a\u00a0Safari<\/strong>. One might say the\u00a0theme for\u00a0the journey to Iola<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>was environmentally<\/em> driven<\/strong>. Once airborne,\u00a0you’ll see.<\/p>\n

Kansas Meteorology<\/h4>\n

While people tend to think of\u00a0Kansas as\u00a0dry and dusty<\/strong>, its climate is actually classified<\/strong> as Humid Subtropical<\/strong><\/a>. This translates to\u00a0humid summers<\/strong> with\u00a0mild<\/strong> to cold winters<\/strong>. For The Sky Surfer<\/strong><\/a>, the Safari to Iola<\/strong> accentuated the “humid”<\/em>\u00a0description of the clime to a degree not seen since The Harper Run<\/strong><\/a>…<\/p>\n

Iola<\/strong> is over 100 miles Northeast<\/strong> of\u00a0The Sky Surfer’s<\/strong> home base – Blue Sky Aerodrome<\/strong>. That’s near his Sky Safari<\/strong> maximum range. So let this\u00a0serve as an announcement<\/strong> (warning?)<\/em> that because the fog-shrouded plains seen below him<\/strong>\u00a0that morning\u00a0presented such marvelous scenes,<\/strong>\u00a0he included\u00a0lots<\/strong> of\u00a0the\u00a0photos <\/strong>taken during the opening\u00a0phase of the journey<\/strong>. We\u00a0think you will like them but if they are not your cup of tea<\/em>\u00a0– just “fast forward”<\/em> to the\u00a0arrival at Iola<\/strong>. The town has plenty of interest.<\/p>\n

This was taken right after takeoff looking Northeast<\/strong>. I was at 600′ AGL. Derby, Kansas<\/strong><\/a> can be seen past the dense ground fog. Among the interesting features of this scene are the “waves”<\/em> in the ground fog<\/strong> at the lower left.<\/p><\/div>\n

This was taken right after the previous shot. We are looking Southeast<\/strong> now. Mulvane, Kansas<\/a><\/strong> is just below the horizon near the sun. If you look closely you can see The<\/strong> Arkansas River<\/strong><\/a> making an “S” to the right\u00a0of Mulvane<\/strong>. The waves<\/strong> in the fog seen in the previous shot are more pronounced at this angle\u00a0because of the way the sun is playing on them.<\/p><\/div>\n

Concern<\/h4>\n

During this leg of the trip I monitored<\/strong> the “thickness”<\/em> of the ground fog very carefully<\/strong>. As long as I could see the ground beneath<\/strong> it I continued. If it became deep enough to obscure the terrain<\/strong> I was prepared to turn back, turn to an alternate airport or land in a hay field until it burned off (Check out “Brian in the Fog”<\/strong><\/a>)<\/em>. With airplanes, one always needs to be ready for the possibility of an engine failure. The defense for an engine failure<\/strong> is to continually pick out potential<\/strong> landing spots<\/strong> you could glide to in that event. You can’t do that if you can’t\u00a0see the the ground<\/strong>, though. Even though the more horizontal shots<\/strong> make it appear impenetrable<\/strong>, I could always see through the fog in a decent cone beneath me that would allow an unscheduled landing<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A Good Bump<\/h4>\n

Throughout this leg of the journey I had been the recipient<\/strong> of a 10 to 12 mph tailwind<\/strong>. I experimented<\/strong> with altitudes to find the sweet spot and 1,200′ AGL was the best<\/strong>. Below you will see The Kansas Flint Hills<\/strong><\/a>. I was amazed to see the fog still holding<\/strong> all the way out here, too. Usually I fly\u00a0outbound<\/strong> at a much lower altitude<\/strong> in order to stay under the headwind<\/strong> and then ride it home. The trip to Iola<\/strong> was\u00a0the exception<\/strong> to the rule.<\/p>\n

There is nothing special<\/strong> about the\u00a0shot above<\/strong> except for the lone bull<\/strong> in the center (cue Herb Alpert<\/a>)<\/em>. Mostly<\/strong> what you see is his shadow<\/strong>. I know he’s been wandering around all morning thinking, “Man, I know\u00a0I have a herd around here someplace…”<\/em>. When you are lost in The Flint Hills<\/strong>, you are really<\/em> lost.<\/p>\n

This is the Southern part of Toronto Lake<\/a><\/strong>. The town of Toronto, Kansas<\/a><\/strong> is at its Northern end.<\/p><\/div>\n

Choices, Choices<\/h4>\n

I’m always writing\u00a0about keeping an emergency landing spot<\/strong>\u00a0underneath on which to glide<\/strong> in case of an engine failure<\/strong>. Frankly, though, if you are going to get out of the pattern, there will be times<\/strong> when this is not possible. In those instances, one must choose<\/strong>\u00a0between bad and worse<\/strong> (usually with extenuating circumstances)<\/em>. Toronto Lake<\/strong> presented itself directly in my flight path. Examining\u00a0the shot above<\/strong> you can see a considerable forest-marsh area<\/strong> to the left and a stretch of water to the fore. I decided to go over the water because with the altitude I was holding I would have minimum exposure<\/strong> to a water landing. I figured I could glide to the bright green spit if needed be. That’s better than coming down in the tops of trees by far<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Slight Deviation…<\/h4>\n

After deciding the course<\/strong> you see in the center<\/strong> of the shot above<\/strong>, a large group of white birds<\/strong> floating to the south of the light green isthmus<\/strong> caught my attention. I diverted<\/strong> to the right in order to take the<\/strong> picture<\/strong> of them you see below.<\/p>\n

I was high enough that they did not spook as I crossed over them. I think they are egrets.<\/p><\/div>\n

This is Lake Fegan which is about 5 miles East Northeast of Toronto Lake.<\/p><\/div>\n

Kansas Limestone<\/a><\/h4>\n

A natural resource<\/strong> of great worth<\/strong> is Kansas Limestone<\/strong>. It is used for buildings, signs and markers. In the days of settlement<\/strong>, because board wood<\/strong> was expensive<\/strong> and had to be imported, farmers used limestone<\/strong> to make fence posts<\/strong>. You can still see<\/strong> them at various places across the state<\/strong>. I have also seen slabs of limestone<\/strong> used to fence<\/strong> in an entire home<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Round Or Square?<\/h4>\n

Hay bales<\/strong> come in a variety of sizes<\/strong> and are\u00a0either cylindrical<\/strong>\u00a0or rectangular<\/strong>. When I was young, hay bales<\/strong> were always rectangular<\/strong> and mostly small<\/strong> enough to lift<\/strong>. In the 1970’s, farm equipment companies introduced the large round bales<\/strong> which can weigh up to 3,000 pounds<\/strong>. Typically they are sheathed in a plastic mesh or sometimes a partial or full plastic wrap. There are advantages<\/strong> to the various methods<\/strong>. A more complete discussion\u00a0of hay storage techniques<\/strong>\u00a0is available at several places on the web – Like HERE<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0HERE<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Regardless of the size or shape of the bale, it is best to keep them out of the rain in a shed like you see here.<\/p><\/div>\n

This was off in the distance from my path but I always take pictures of abandoned silos with trees<\/strong> growing up through them.<\/p><\/div>\n

In A Fog<\/h4>\n

Earlier<\/strong> I presented a number of photos<\/strong> featuring the beauty<\/strong> of the prairie<\/strong> enveloped in ground fog<\/strong>. About an hour and 45 minutes<\/strong> into the trip, the wind<\/strong> direction shifted<\/strong> and was beginning to hinder<\/strong>\u00a0my progress. To remedy<\/strong> this I dropped out of the stratosphere\u00a0to cruise at\u00a0300′<\/strong>. This alleviated<\/strong> the quartering headwind<\/strong>\u00a0but resulted with\u00a0an\u00a0unintended consequence<\/strong>. The problem was the insistent fog\/haze<\/strong> in conjunction <\/strong>with the angle <\/strong>of the sun<\/strong>.\u00a0The shot below was taken as I crossed the Neosho River<\/strong><\/a> about 4 miles West of the airport. Normally<\/strong>\u00a0at that altitude<\/strong> and distance<\/strong> I should have been able to see evidence<\/strong> of my destination<\/strong> but not that morning<\/em>…<\/p>\n

A\u00a0good thing<\/strong> about my Quicksilver<\/strong> is that the gas tank<\/strong> is located right above my head<\/strong> so I can easily see the amount of fuel<\/strong> I have. The bad thing<\/strong> is that when it gets down<\/strong> to the last<\/strong> gallon<\/strong> and the destination<\/strong> is not in sight<\/strong> it consumes all my attention. In the shot below, the brightness<\/strong> of the sky to the right (Northeast)<\/em> is a good equivalent<\/strong> of what my eyes saw: Nothing but Bright White<\/strong>. I began to doubt my GPS<\/strong> and looked for a place to land<\/strong> so I could consult my map<\/strong>. I wondered if\u00a0I was too far South<\/strong>. While dithering around, not able to make a decision, I passed over a number of really nice landing field\u00a0candidates<\/strong> but continued on in hopes of seeing the destination<\/strong>. Finally I was seized<\/strong> with the desire<\/strong> to land<\/strong> and figure out where I was. By then, though,\u00a0the good spots were all behind me<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

Suburbanite Goes To The Country<\/h4>\n

OK. I grew up in Suburbia<\/strong>. Since moving<\/strong> to\u00a0Kansas<\/strong> in 1980<\/strong>, I have been interested in The Farm Life<\/strong> and have come to know<\/strong> a little\u00a0bit<\/strong><\/span> about crops<\/strong> and farming<\/strong>. Some I learned by\u00a0discussions with farmers,<\/strong> some I might read in the paper<\/strong> and some I learned from observation<\/strong>. Some things about farming<\/strong> I learned\u00a0the hard way<\/strong> – from<\/strong> direct experience<\/strong><\/span>. This was such an opportunity…<\/p>\n

A fine<\/strong> and wonderful thing<\/strong> about The Great Plains<\/strong> is the constant availability<\/strong>\u00a0below almost any flight path<\/strong> of an abundance<\/strong> of\u00a0perfect landing fields.<\/strong>\u00a0Non-Pilots<\/strong>\u00a0refer to these landing fields\u00a0as\u00a0mowed hay fields<\/strong>. Countless times<\/strong> I have touched down<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0them and have found them to be absolutely ideal <\/strong>for that purpose.<\/strong><\/p>\n

From the lead-in discussion<\/strong> to the previous picture<\/strong>, you might have\u00a0formed the idea<\/strong> that I boxed<\/strong> myself<\/strong> into a corner<\/strong>. I won’t confirm or deny that<\/em>. By the time I finally committed<\/strong>\u00a0to land, I looked ahead<\/strong> and saw an open field<\/strong> about a quarter\u00a0mile<\/strong> from my position. This suited me fine because I didn’t want to back track<\/strong> to any of the 3 perfect hay fields<\/strong> I had just passed over. Going forward<\/strong> would save fuel<\/strong>. I mentally patted myself on the back\u00a0for persevering in my quest<\/strong>. That glow extinguished when\u00a0I was\u00a0close enough to see it was a harvested corn field. I had never landed on, walked on or in any serious way considered a harvested corn field before…<\/p>\n

I throttled down<\/strong> to make a low pass<\/strong> over the field. From about 10 feet<\/strong> I could see there was plenty of room<\/strong> between the few stalks<\/strong> that remained<\/strong> in the ground\u00a0<\/strong>as long as I landed with the rows<\/strong> and not across<\/strong> them. Confident<\/strong> of my piloting ability<\/strong>, I decided I would “put ‘er down”<\/em>\u00a0in one of those clear rows,\u00a0<\/strong>get out and\u00a0look at the map<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That I did. In the bargain I learned something new<\/strong> about farming that everyone I discussed this with in the interim takes as “common knowledge”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Corn Cobs<\/h4>\n

What I couldn’t see<\/strong> in my low pass of the field was the nearly complete blanket of corn cobs<\/strong>\u00a0over the field. This became apparent<\/strong>\u00a0the moment my wheels touched down<\/strong> and they pitched\u00a0out in all directions<\/strong> around me. Upon checking the propeller<\/strong> I am happy to report no strikes<\/strong> but it did make for a very rough<\/strong> landing field. I did some research<\/strong> and found that corncobs<\/strong> had been\u00a0used for heating<\/strong> years ago\u00a0and have potential<\/strong> for making ethanol<\/strong> but with the advent of combines<\/strong> they are just tossed<\/strong> back<\/strong> onto the field.<\/p>\n

It did make for a nice picture of the MXL<\/strong> but that’s the last cornfield<\/strong> I will purposely land in.<\/p><\/div>\n

Iola Proximate<\/h4>\n

My corny landing<\/strong> at least allowed me to confirm<\/strong>\u00a0the GPS.<\/strong>\u00a0After takeoff I climbed<\/strong> for a better view and it wasn’t five more minutes<\/strong> of flying before I<\/strong> saw the town<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A Slave To Convention<\/h4>\n

In the shot below, the airport<\/strong> is quite a bit to the right of\u00a0the right edge of the frame. It is 4 miles South of town<\/strong> and would have been fairly quick<\/strong> to reach from that point<\/strong>. But, my Standard Operating Procedure<\/strong> (SOP)<\/em> upon reaching a Safari Destination<\/strong> is to grab my aerials<\/strong> of the town FIRST.<\/strong>\u00a0That way if the scene gets cloudy or I run long on the ground and am pressed for time or any other issues, I will have some “sky shots” of the town. I suppose<\/strong> I could write a Sky Safari Story<\/strong> about a town even without aerial views<\/strong> of it. I personally would find it severely lacking<\/strong>, unprofessional<\/strong> and an embarrassment<\/strong> and far below<\/strong> the high standards<\/strong> of The Sky Surfer<\/strong>. I might even have to post it under another name… Thus it is a priority<\/strong> and this next series<\/strong> will reveal\u00a0the result of said effort. I will circumnavigate Iola<\/strong>\u00a0clockwise starting from its\u00a0Southwest<\/strong> side and then exit on its\u00a0Southeast<\/strong> side, then\u00a0heading<\/strong> to the airport<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This is the center of Iola<\/strong> from the Southwest<\/strong>. I’m still shooting through the haze<\/strong>. I am at 1,500′ AGL<\/strong>. In a bit you will see some of these buildings<\/strong> from street level<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

I spent 20 minutes scouring the Internet<\/strong> to be able to tell you what this is and I am still not 100% sure. It\u00a0lies on the West edge<\/strong> of town on Hwy 54<\/strong> adjacent to the Neosho River<\/strong>. Even though it looks too small to me, it is most likely the city power plant<\/strong>. Please let me know if it is not…<\/p><\/div>\n

And by the way there is a town called Bassola which consists of about 10 or 15 residents. They have a city council and Mayor form of government.<\/em>”<\/p>\n

Check This Out…<\/h4>\n

It took me about 20 minutes<\/strong> to find a map<\/strong> on the web with names of these three bodies of water<\/strong> on the South Side<\/strong> of Iola<\/strong>. Farthest West<\/strong>, at the top of the photo below, are\u00a0the water purification vessels. Then MapQuest<\/strong> says that both<\/span><\/strong> of the other lakes are named Lake Bassola<\/strong>. Maybe one is Lake Bassola Minor<\/strong> and the other Lake Bassola Major<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

After landing\u00a0I tied my plane down<\/strong> as soon as possible. The 4 seater on the left landed and taxied up while I was securing<\/strong> my Ultralight<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Allen County Airport is excellent<\/strong>. Self service fuel. The office is nice. There is a fridge with cool drinks<\/strong>. It is air conditioned<\/strong> and they have a couple of vehicles<\/strong> to borrow for a quick look around town.<\/p><\/div>\n

Contest For County Seat<\/h4>\n

As I research<\/strong> the small towns<\/strong> to which I Safari, I have learned the importance<\/strong> of being the County Seat<\/strong> – particularly during the settlement years<\/strong>. Iola<\/strong> was formed by a group of citizens<\/strong> who were disgruntled<\/strong> at the Kansas Legislature’s<\/strong> choice of Humboldt, Kansas<\/strong> to be the Allen County<\/a> Seat<\/strong> in 1858. In 1859\u00a0they started their own town. They named it after the wife<\/strong> of one of the owners of the property upon which the town was platted. They continued to politic<\/strong> for this position<\/strong> and were finally vindicated<\/strong> at the end of The Civil War. They finally garnered<\/strong> the votes<\/strong> necessary and were declared The Allen\u00a0County Seat<\/strong> on May 19, 1865.<\/p>\n

Now that you have seen Iola<\/strong> from the air, I will show you various things that caught my attention<\/strong> as I drove around to see it for the first time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Saturday Is A Work Day In Iola<\/h4>\n

I walked over to\u00a0Ron Goodman<\/strong> as he took a break from mowing and commenced to converse<\/strong>. Ron<\/strong> told me he works for Slife Lawn Service<\/strong>\u00a0who has the contract for all the county grounds keeping<\/strong>. He also told me there are tunnels<\/strong> under many of the buildings around The Square<\/strong>. I have visited other Kansas<\/strong> towns that also had tunnels<\/strong> under their buildings. Iola’s\u00a0<\/strong>were closed<\/strong> that day but one of these Safaris I will get a chance to see what prairie town tunnels<\/strong>\u00a0are like.<\/p>\n

I dropped into B&B Cafe<\/strong><\/a> for what I thought would be a quick bite. The place was hopping<\/strong> and all the tables were full. I ordered lunch<\/strong> and they brought out a huge meal<\/strong>. It was very good but way more<\/span> than I generally eat. The waitress<\/strong> asked if I wanted to take the leftovers<\/strong> with me in a box<\/strong> but I had to politely decline<\/strong>. There is just no room<\/strong> for baggage of that nature on my plane. She asked if I was on a motorcycle but when I explained my “ride”<\/em>, she was quite intrigued<\/strong>. Of course, she is now in possession of a Sky Surfer Calling Card<\/strong> and Writing Pen<\/strong>. Maybe she looked at my website.<\/p>\n

Iola Civil War Memorial<\/h4>\n

I had been told to look for the War Memorial<\/strong>\u00a0by Ron Goodman<\/strong> earlier but had not yet seen any signs<\/strong> pointing it out. I asked Alexis<\/strong> how to find it, and excellently<\/em>, it was nearby<\/strong>. As soon as I left the restaurant I made a beeline<\/strong> to it.<\/p>\n

The Soldier State<\/h4>\n

Research<\/strong> on the web informed me that Kansas<\/strong>\u00a0was called The Soldier State<\/strong> because so many soldiers<\/strong> settled here after<\/strong> The Civil War<\/strong>. There is a superb website dedicated to the monuments and memorials of The G.A.R. HERE<\/strong><\/a>. My study has been primarily World War II<\/strong> so I didn’t immediately recognize the acronym<\/strong>. It stands for The Grand Army of the Republic<\/strong>. I had seen GAR<\/strong> stars in the\u00a0cemetery<\/b>\u00a0of Attica, Kansas<\/strong> when I Safaried there. That story<\/strong><\/a> has some very<\/strong> interesting elements<\/strong> you might like to see<\/strong> and read about<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Hot And Humid (And Far)<\/h4>\n

Iola<\/strong> is 107 miles<\/strong> from my home field<\/strong>. While it is not<\/strong> the farthest Safari<\/strong> I have made, it is pretty close to that record (117 miles to date)<\/em>. After “whirlwind touring”<\/em> this treasure trove<\/strong> of architectural<\/strong> and historical delights<\/strong>, it was time to hitch up<\/strong> and blow out of Iola<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As it would happen, I would make\u00a0another landing<\/strong>\u00a0on the return journey<\/strong>, meet more folks<\/strong> and see some\u00a0interesting motive objects<\/em>\u00a0of historical import<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

Just after liftoff I took this shot of the business end of Allen County Municipal<\/strong> under my right wing and then caught the wave to\u00a0Wichita.<\/p><\/div>\n

As I left the airport pattern<\/strong>\u00a0heading Southwest, I took a telephoto shot<\/strong> of\u00a0these installations to the South<\/strong>. I suppose they are Humbolt, Kansas<\/a><\/strong> (closer) and then Chanute, Kansas<\/a><\/strong> farther off in the distance. Chanute<\/strong> has an airport so The Sky Surfer<\/strong> will be sailing there before too long.<\/p><\/div>\n

The Same But Different<\/h4>\n

Because I stick pretty close<\/strong> to my course line to and from<\/strong> a destination, I will often cross over<\/strong> the same areas<\/strong> or objects. It’s a judgment call<\/strong> whether to take pictures both times<\/strong>. If I think the lighting<\/strong> is better<\/strong> or there is less haze<\/strong> or something new<\/strong> is revealed I will include shots<\/strong> from both directions<\/strong>. I think the shots<\/strong> in this next series<\/strong> passed on all three accounts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Flint Hills<\/h4>\n

One of my all time favorite movies<\/strong> was actually a TV series<\/strong> called “Lonesome Dove<\/a><\/strong>“<\/em> featuring one of my top 10 all time favorite movie actors –<\/strong> Robert Duvall<\/strong><\/a>. That series and most of The Great Western Movies<\/strong> used dramatic panoramic shots to give sense of the great open spaces of The Wide Open West<\/strong>. Being out here by myself<\/strong> gives me an inkling of what it was like to be first to enter these places in the 1800’s<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This cattle pond was in my line of travel so I banked a few degrees to the left and passed them about 10 yards from the water. That’s about all it takes to keep them from getting nervous. They just watched me go by.<\/p><\/div>\n

A little farther along I pass over some red cedars. I like to turn the motor a little slower but 4510 rpm is pretty good for fuel economy.<\/p><\/div>\n

An Interesting Sequence<\/h4>\n

Even though some might think The Plains are all the same, these next two shots give you some idea how quickly things can change out here. I was skimming along at about 50′ AGL when I came upon the area shown below with all the trees. It was in a low area just after climbing a slow rise. I don’t like to fly low over forests because they do not allow for landing in case of an engine failure. I climbed to get some altitude…<\/p>\n

Then, quite unexpectedly, this strange site below appears…<\/em><\/p>\n

I was flying under a headwind<\/strong> to conserve fuel. When I saw the strange “white hill”<\/em> in the next shot it was all I could do to fire up the camera<\/strong> and grab a shot under my right wing<\/strong>. I don’t like having a wing cable in the shot but that’s the best I could do because I didn’t want to use up gas<\/strong> circling around for another look. I think it is\u00a0tailings<\/strong><\/a> from a dig. As I am writing this I checked a satellite photo<\/strong> and the area does appear\u00a0to be an open pit mining enterprise<\/strong> of some type. I did not discover\u00a0what type of resource they were digging up.<\/p>\n

At the crest of the hill on the opposite side was a Hunting Lodge<\/strong> I have seen before on a trip to Cottonwood Falls<\/strong><\/a> a few years prior. Not wanting to waste gas I took this\u00a0quick shot<\/strong> through the space behind my Left Wing.<\/p><\/div>\n

Headwind Realities<\/h4>\n

My flight profile<\/strong> is not about speed<\/strong> or time per se, but The Trip<\/strong> – The Process<\/strong><\/em>. If I was interested in traveling from Point A<\/em> to Point B<\/em> in a hurry<\/strong> I would choose a different conveyance<\/strong>\u00a0for sure. Ultralight Flying is not about speed<\/strong>. It does fall\u00a0under the laws of physics<\/strong>, though, and a headwind<\/strong> can<\/em><\/span>\u00a0run you out of gas<\/strong> before you get to Point B<\/strong>. As I approached Beaumont, Kansas I decided my fuel level was a bit lower than I needed to reach Blue Sky Aerodrome<\/strong><\/a>. I landed to put some more gas in the tank.<\/p>\n

Beaumont Hotel and Restaurant<\/strong><\/a> is unique in that you can taxi your airplane up to the door. Here is the scene from my cockpit<\/strong> as I approach the stop sign on the road from the airfield.<\/p><\/div>\n

Always Interesting<\/h4>\n

There is never\u00a0a dull moment<\/strong> when\u00a0stopping at Beaumont<\/strong>. The food is good<\/strong>, there are signed photographs<\/strong>\u00a0throughout the Hotel featuring\u00a0“notable world aviators”<\/em> who have visited it, and there are always folks interested in airplanes<\/strong> that want to see what you flew in. On this trip, before I shut down the motor, Steve Nielsen<\/strong> had walked over to say “Hi”<\/em> and check out the Quicksilver<\/strong>. Steve<\/strong> works for the school district<\/strong> in Wichita<\/strong> and was out with his buddies riding their classic motorcycles<\/strong>. They had stopped in Beaumont<\/strong> before heading into the backroads of The Flint Hills<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
