A Long Wait<\/h4>\n

A\u00a0year prior\u00a0to\u00a0my Sky Safari<\/strong> to Oologah, Oklahoma<\/strong><\/a>, I read\u00a0an article discussing the annual Fly-In<\/strong> there. It\u00a0described\u00a0the huge\u00a0turnout<\/strong> for the event and that it had happened the weekend before I read\u00a0about it<\/em>. So, I missed it – again<\/strong>. I had heard about\u00a0the Oologah Fly-In<\/strong> for years but always after it had occurred<\/em>. Finally I made it a top priority<\/strong>\u00a0to fly there for the 2014 rendition<\/strong>. \u00a0I put a note in my “2014 Events<\/strong>” folder to do just that. As the time\u00a0drew near, I checked\u00a0on the Internet<\/strong>\u00a0to see if it was still “on<\/strong>“. I found a\u00a0web\u00a0article<\/strong> posted by an Oklahoma newspaper\u00a0talking up The Fly-In<\/strong>\u00a0which would be the next\u00a0Saturday<\/strong>. Excellent! Finally, I would get to this monumental event. Upwards of 200 airplanes<\/strong> were expected. Coming all the way from Wichita<\/strong><\/a>, there would be little doubt I would be the “Farthest Flying Ultralight<\/strong>” there. That\u00a0was\u00a0sure to generate a lot of buzz<\/strong>.\u00a0Celebrity status<\/strong> was just around the corner for\u00a0The Sky Surfer<\/strong>. Visions of Great Fame<\/strong> filled his head and, after all, Oologah<\/strong>\u00a0is home to one of the most famous aviators\u00a0in history<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Great Will Rogers<\/p><\/div>\n

Will Rogers<\/a><\/strong> was born in Oologah<\/strong>. Known as “The Cherokee Kid<\/strong>“, “Good Will Ambassador<\/strong>” and “The Most Dangerous Writer Alive<\/strong>“, Will Rogers<\/strong> was arguably The Most Famous Man\u00a0in<\/strong> America<\/strong> during the 1920’s and the first half of the 30’s. If ever there was “a Man for The Times<\/strong>“, it was Will Rogers<\/strong>. He spoke for the “Everyman<\/strong>” who had no voice. He knew their hearts and spoke to power on their behalf. Loved by all<\/strong> but feared<\/strong> by the mighty<\/strong>, Will’s<\/strong>\u00a0most famous utterance was “I never met a man I didn’t like<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n

Will helped\u00a0legitimize\u00a0aviation<\/strong> at a time when it was struggling to become a serious business\u00a0in an era when it was written off as\u00a0a barnstorming, sideshow act. He was one of the first to realize the “time machine”<\/em> quality of aircraft. During his career<\/strong> he would criss-cross the continent<\/strong> by air many times to various engagements. He also flew overseas<\/strong> to many nations’ capitols and other exotic locations<\/strong> spreading his Homespun American Charm<\/strong> wherever he went.<\/p>\n

I remember seeing old films starring Will<\/strong> and innumerable news reel cuts<\/strong> of him throwing off his inimitable “one liners<\/strong>” in the effortless manner of\u00a0the Oklahoma Cowpoke<\/strong> he was. Like fellow Oklahoman Ben Johnson<\/strong> (read about my visit to his<\/span> home ground HERE<\/strong><\/a>)<\/em>, he was a guy you just couldn’t help but like. An American Original<\/strong>. On the Will Rogers Museums website<\/strong><\/a> is probably the finest\u00a0tribute given to Rogers<\/strong>. Written by Another<\/strong>\u00a0Great American,\u00a0Gene Autry<\/a><\/strong>, it is well worth your time to read. You can find it HERE<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

A Brush With Greatness<\/h4>\n

A few years back, an on-going gag<\/strong> on various radio and TV shows would be a call-in segment<\/strong> where folks would relate a moment when by chance<\/strong> they came into contact with a bona fide<\/em> “Famous Person”<\/strong>. The stories would\u00a0follow\u00a0the line of, “I was in the canned goods aisle of the grocery when a lady dropped a can of peas. I stepped over to pick it up for her and when our eyes met I realized it was\u00a0Beyonc\u00e9<\/a>. She said, “Thanks!” and I replied, “You’re welcome”. Then she walked away…”<\/p>\n

My 2014 Brush With Greatness<\/strong> would be landing my Ultralight<\/strong> on Will Roger’s Home Field<\/strong>\u00a0in the company of hundreds of other flyers there for\u00a0The Annual Dog Iron Ranch Fly-In<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It was “zero dark thirty”<\/em> when I arrived at Blue Sky Aerodrome<\/strong>. I decided to turn on the hangar lights for a change and snapped this shot from the far end of the building. You can see my Quicksilver<\/strong> at the far left and the lights of my Mini Cooper<\/strong>\u00a0outside the hangar door.<\/p><\/div>\n

Quick Turnaround<\/h4>\n

The flight to Oologah<\/strong><\/a> was to be my longest one yet – 116 miles<\/strong>. After parking\u00a0my car I rolled the Quicksilver<\/strong> out. The previous evening<\/strong> I had preflighted<\/strong> the plane and topped off the gas. Once I was sure I had all my necessary items, I started the motor and hit the sky<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Items Of Interest<\/h4>\n

If you have read any of my Sky Safari stories<\/strong>, you know I am constantly on the lookout for interesting photo subjects<\/strong>. After passing the Winfield, Kansas<\/strong><\/a> area, I saw\u00a0ahead a number of cylindrical objects strewn about a small field. I dropped down close to the surface to investigate. It was an Oil Service Company’s holding area<\/strong> complete with tanks, trucks and pump jacks.<\/p>\n

Oilfield Items<\/p><\/div>\n

The Long View<\/h4>\n

Most\u00a0“civilian” weather casts don’t make note of it but Aviation Weather<\/strong> casts always do… Visibility<\/strong><\/a>, that is.<\/em> When you are on the ground, poor\u00a0visibility<\/strong> is only an issue\u00a0when fog or smoke<\/strong> becomes so thick it affects automobile traffic<\/strong>. For Aviators<\/strong>, though, visibility<\/strong> requirements are more demanding<\/strong>. Professionals<\/strong> are required to fly<\/strong> in marginal<\/strong> and bad weather<\/strong> all the time. Even so, they must adhere to published minimum visibility requirements.<\/p>\n

For The Sky Surfer<\/strong><\/a>, your basic\u00a0“Fair Air\u00a0Flyer” and “Sky Journalist”<\/em>, the issue of “miles of visibility”<\/em> has much more to do with photo quality<\/strong>\u00a0than legal requirements. On this Safari<\/strong>, the air contained significant\u00a0haze<\/strong><\/a> the entire day. The shot below, looking Southwest<\/strong>, is a good example of the limiting factor haze represents<\/strong> for an “infinity”<\/em>\u00a0(horizon)<\/em> shot.<\/p>\n

Sometimes haze works for you in a shot. <\/strong>It adds\u00a0depth to\u00a0this scene\u00a0near the Kansas \/ Oklahoma border<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Some miles past the previous\u00a0meadow scene, I cross into the open prairie of Northern Oklahoma<\/strong>. This is from 200′ AGL<\/strong> looking Southeast<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

The bluffs in this area, similar to those\u00a0in The Kansas Flint Hills<\/strong>, are a marvelous thing to behold.<\/p><\/div>\n

Wooded areas like this are the exception in Kansas<\/strong> but become more prominent the farther South<\/strong> I go. This was taken from 75′ AGL<\/strong> looking Southwest<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

For at least 40 minutes<\/strong> I flew along without seeing any signs of Humanity<\/strong>. Then I came upon this feeding station. Besides a few head of cattle, no\u00a0one was around, though.<\/p><\/div>\n

Then, it was back to just The Sky Surfer<\/strong> and The Great Plains<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

\u00a0Break Time<\/h4>\n

I had flown for about two hours through some of the most beautiful landscapes God has given man to see<\/strong>. My plan was to stop at the Bartlesville Municipal Airport<\/strong><\/a> to get some gas before continuing to Oologah<\/strong>. I had flown to Bartlesville<\/strong>\u00a0before (the story is HERE<\/strong><\/a>)<\/em>. For a long\u00a0time it was\u00a0the home of the annual “BiPlane Fly-In”<\/em> until the event\u00a0moved to Junction City, Kansas<\/strong><\/a> under the sponsorship of The Flint Hills EAA Chapter 1364<\/strong> and Auto Dealer Jim Clark<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I was guesstimating<\/strong> I should\u00a0be seeing Bartlesville<\/strong> at any moment but I also could see my gas tank was running low. While the territory<\/strong> I had been crossing for the past 2 hours was replete with “engine out”<\/em> landing spots, the area on the Northwest<\/strong> outskirts of Bartlesville<\/strong> is pretty rough. If\u00a0I dial back the motor and trim for maximum range, I can fly about 2 hours and 20 minutes<\/strong> on a tank of gas. For safety I would need\u00a0to climb to 6 or 800′ to give me opportunity to land on the many oil field service roads<\/strong> and clear patches<\/strong> this side of Bartlesville Muni<\/strong>\u00a0in case of engine failure. Climbing that high would eat into<\/strong>\u00a0that “20 minutes”<\/em> remaining. I decided to land and\u00a0check my position<\/strong> before continuing. I need\u00a0to make sure<\/strong> I was on course.<\/p>\n

Recon<\/h4>\n

I landed in a spot not far<\/strong> from one of the few ranches<\/strong> in the area. I figured if I was too far from Bartlesville<\/strong> I would approach them to buy some gas<\/strong> before continuing on. I have an excellent Garmin Hiking GPS<\/strong> I use for navigation but the screen\u00a0is not particularly large<\/strong>. It is adequate for viewing my course<\/strong>, course deviation<\/strong> and ground speed<\/strong> but the map page\u00a0is way too small<\/strong> for The Sky Surfer’s<\/strong> presbyopic eyes<\/a> to acquire while in flight. So, in a situation when it counts, I land and examine\u00a0it (sometimes with a magnifying glass)<\/em>. While writing this,\u00a0it occurs to me I could\u00a0program a page on the GPS for “miles to”<\/em> and “time to”<\/em> destination<\/strong> but I haven’t done that yet. I’ll stop writing this and do it right now…<\/p>\n

Excellent!<\/h4>\n

I finally did it.<\/strong> I got up from the workstation, pulled my GPS<\/strong> from my “flight box”<\/strong> and added “Miles to”<\/strong> and “Time to”<\/strong> on one of my main pages. Man, that only took 3 or 4 years…<\/em><\/p>\n

Back To The Safari<\/h4>\n

So, after examining the GPS map<\/strong>, I verified I was but 10 miles from Bartlesville Municipal<\/strong>. Even though the head wind<\/strong> was slowly building, I would press on. I had enough gas to make it just fine.<\/p>\n

This was taken a few minutes after getting airborne. I am at 400′ AGL and you can see the terrain is getting rougher.<\/p><\/div>\n

Pipelines<\/h4>\n

As I am writing this, the politically generated “controversy”<\/em> regarding the Keystone XL Pipeline<\/strong><\/a> continues. The Greenies<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0would have us believe this particular pipeline<\/strong> is something new – something out of the ordinary. It’s not<\/strong>. It pains me to consider\u00a0the\u00a0general public’s lack of understanding regarding\u00a0the huge number of pipelines criss-crossing our Nation. If you want to see for yourself, I found an excellent U.S. Government site<\/strong> that shows them all (HERE<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n

Pipelines are everywhere<\/strong> and are monitored constantly<\/strong>. I know two pilots in Kansas who patrol\u00a0them by air for a living\u00a0(see them in stories\u00a0HERE<\/strong><\/a> and HERE<\/strong><\/a>)<\/em>. But you know, as I write this it occurs to me that I could\u00a0be\u00a0too harsh\u00a0on these folks. They really have no reason to\u00a0know much about pipelines because\u00a0they are so well maintained and safe<\/strong> – and underground<\/span><\/strong> – that nobody has occasion\u00a0to think about\u00a0them.<\/p>\n

The Obama<\/strong>\u00a0Administration’s concerns<\/strong>\u00a0with the Keystone<\/strong> are strictly political payback – not safety or environmentally oriented as they contend.<\/p>\n

Maintenance, Maintenance…<\/h4>\n

Below\u00a0is the area I was talking about when I landed to check my position. It is on the Northwest<\/strong> side of Bartlesville<\/strong> and presents a very<\/strong>\u00a0limited availability<\/strong>\u00a0of emergency landing spots. Having enough fuel to cross over it is just\u00a0good pilotage<\/strong>. Having the engine not fail<\/strong> is a testament to good maintenance<\/strong> and the quality<\/strong> of the equipment<\/strong>. I expend considerable effort<\/strong> to keep the engine<\/strong> in good shape<\/strong> and believe my\u00a0Rotax 503 DCDI<\/strong><\/a> to be the best two stroke motor<\/strong>\u00a0available in this category.<\/p>\n

Earlier, flying much lower, the large mound<\/strong>\u00a0in the foreground<\/strong>\u00a0prevented me from seeing\u00a0Bartlesville <\/strong>even though it was relatively close. At this point I am at 800′ AGL<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Fuel Stop<\/strong><\/p>\n

After landing, I noticed the wind<\/strong> on the surface was intermittent<\/strong> so I felt comfortable\u00a0stepping away<\/strong> from the plane to get the next\u00a0shot<\/strong>. I know from experience not to get too far<\/strong> from my Ultralight<\/strong> on a smooth surface such as this. A slight breeze<\/strong> can propel the craft into a\u00a0fence<\/strong> or other unyielding object<\/strong> when it is not tied down<\/strong>. The plane<\/strong>\u00a0is strong<\/strong> in the air but does<\/strong> not<\/strong> handle impacts<\/strong> well.
\nI was looking for the fuel truck<\/strong>. That’s how they sell gas\u00a0here rather than using “in ground”<\/em>\u00a0fuel pumps.<\/p>\n

As I stepped out and looked down the ramp I could see Allen Parker<\/strong>, the line tech. He was about a quarter mile down<\/strong> near some other hangars. With\u00a0body language<\/strong>\u00a0he pointed to the fuel truck shrugging his shoulders with hands out to ask if I needed fuel. I responded<\/strong> with an affirmative<\/strong> nodding head and arm wave in my direction. Allen<\/strong> jumped in the truck and pulled up<\/strong> next to the MXL<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I had met Allen<\/strong> on my last journey to Bartlesville<\/strong>. In that story I neglected to get a shot of him so while he was working I took the\u00a0“candid” <\/em>below. From a professional perspective<\/strong>, I prefer candid photos<\/strong> to staged shots most\u00a0of the time. There is a place for both in the photo\/journalism<\/strong> universe.\u00a0But, “Candids”<\/em> done right are more “real”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

After he finished I asked Allen<\/strong> if he would pose<\/strong> for a shot so I could get him, his truck<\/strong> and my Quicksilver<\/strong> in one shot. He said “No Thanks”<\/em> because he was in the company uniform<\/strong>. I told him I had already taken a picture<\/strong>\u00a0of him while he was working. I said I wouldn’t use it if it might cause him repercussions. He said since he didn’t know about it when I shot\u00a0it, it would be OK.<\/p>\n

I settled up\u00a0<\/strong>for the gas and continued my journey Southwest<\/strong> to Oologah<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I took quite a few pictures of Bartlesville<\/strong> as I left the area but am inserting only\u00a0a few here. While it was still quite hazy<\/strong>, I think they give\u00a0a good overview of this pleasant town<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Dog Iron\u00a0Ranch<\/h4>\n

Although I have been calling this a trip to Oologah<\/strong>, the destination\u00a0is actually\u00a0Dog Iron Ranch<\/strong><\/a>, the Rogers homestead<\/strong> on the shore of the Oologah Lake<\/strong>. It is\u00a03 miles Northeast<\/strong> of Big “O”\u00a0and features<\/strong> its own runway<\/strong>. Interestingly, The Ranch<\/strong> used to be located on land\u00a0under<\/strong> the lake<\/strong>. When the decision<\/strong> was made to build a dam<\/strong>,\u00a0\u201cThe White House on the Verdigris\u201d,<\/em> as the Rogers’\u00a0home was known, was moved to a high point<\/strong> overlooking the rising water<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Eyes Peeled<\/h4>\n

Since it was about 11am<\/strong> and this event was slated to attract 200 or more\u00a0aircraft<\/strong>, I intently surveyed the area around the lake for air traffic<\/strong>. I didn’t expect a lot of planes in the air because most show up to these affairs pretty early<\/strong> and they probably would be eating lunch<\/strong> or milling about<\/strong> the flight line checking<\/strong> out<\/strong> each other’s planes<\/strong>. I had\u00a0left early enough (6:40 am)<\/em> but it had taken\u00a04 hours and 20 minutes<\/strong> for me to get this far. I figured being a late arrival would add interest<\/strong> to my “Longest Flight by an Ultralight”<\/em> claim. Maybe I would get a plaque!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Triumphant Entry\u00a0Coming Up!<\/h4>\n

Below is the view Southeast<\/strong>\u00a0just after crossing Highway 77.<\/strong> I am at 1,200′ AGL<\/strong>\u00a0peering at the two clearings on this side of the lake for Dog Iron Ranch<\/strong>. From the map I had examined at home, I figured it could be either one. Finally I saw a plane<\/strong> over the clearing directly ahead. He seemed to be entering the pattern<\/strong> downwind to land but I could not make out the landing strip from that distance in the haze. At 38 mph airspeed,\u00a0I motored on<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Dog Iron In Sight – Time To Let Down<\/h4>\n

The plane<\/strong> I was watching completed<\/strong> his pattern<\/strong> and made a low pass<\/strong> and then headed South<\/strong> along the lake. I figured the open space he buzzed<\/strong>\u00a0had to be the Dog Iron Runway<\/strong>. It is very common<\/strong> at Fly-Ins<\/strong> for pilots to fly around the area<\/strong> and make passes<\/strong> at the field. I set up to enter the left hand pattern<\/strong><\/a> that he had established. To do that I would cross over<\/strong> at mid field and then start letting down<\/strong>. Soon, I would discover<\/strong>\u00a0that would not be\u00a0the only let down<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

Wassup?<\/h4>\n

Above you see the\u00a0picture I took as I was about to cross the field<\/strong>\u00a0and enter the traffic pattern. I continued whipping my head around\u00a0vigilant<\/strong> for traffic but the air was uniformly\u00a0scarce<\/strong> of flying machines. A number of scenarios<\/strong> entered my mind…<\/p>\n

  1. Folks\u00a0come to this Fly-In early and leave early.<\/li>\n
  2. I’m<\/em> the early one. They’re all showing up for lunch.<\/li>\n
  3. Maybe that other clearing to the North\u00a0is Dog Iron Ranch<\/em> and this is somebody\u00a0else’s place.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    I saw some\u00a0activity below and I was already in the pattern\u00a0to land so I dropped\u00a0in. I was out of ideas.<\/p>\n

    Hmmmm<\/h4>\n

    Taxiing off the well-kept grass runway<\/strong>, my only greeting was a small herd of disinterested donkeys<\/strong> wandering the area surrounded by a swirling flock of swallows chasing fish flies<\/strong>. It was not what I expected<\/strong>. I taxied to a spot next to an out building<\/strong> to get shelter<\/strong> from\u00a0the South wind<\/strong> before de-planing. At this point, I was\u00a0still holding open the possibility<\/strong> that I was\u00a0at the wrong place<\/strong>. From where\u00a0I parked\u00a0my plane, a fairly large house<\/strong>, out building<\/strong> and barn<\/strong> was\u00a0obscured<\/strong> by trees. I walked over to ascertain my position<\/strong>\u00a0and see if anyone was\u00a0around.<\/p>\n

    Destination Correct But\u00a0Where Is Everybody?<\/h4>\n

    I walked over to the buildings. Signs<\/strong> heralding the Home of Will Rogers<\/strong>\u00a0confirmed I was indeed at\u00a0Dog Iron Ranch<\/strong>. While deciding\u00a0what to do next, the rising wind<\/strong> decided for me. I headed back to my plane to secure it<\/strong>. Though mostly shielded<\/strong> from the wind behind the\u00a0building,\u00a0it would need to be tied down<\/strong> before I could explore the area better. As I returned to\u00a0my plane two folks<\/strong> were getting out of their car. We exchanged waves<\/strong>. As\u00a0I secured\u00a0the plane, they came over<\/strong>. I introduced myself and that’s when I found out…<\/p>\n

    Newspaper Error<\/h4>\n

    Leonard and Linda\u00a0Troglin <\/strong>of Siloam Springs<\/strong> had driven over that morning to see the airplanes<\/strong>, too. They had read\u00a0the same newspaper account<\/strong> I had. While there\u00a0was some\u00a0disappointment,<\/strong>\u00a0we all decided it was still a good day to be alive<\/strong> and at such a scenic\u00a0spot<\/strong>. While we were talking a ranch hand<\/strong> happened by and confirmed<\/strong> the newspaper error<\/strong>. He said the Fly-In<\/strong> would be the next\u00a0day (Sunday. Not Saturday)<\/em>. The Troglin’s<\/strong> said “Goodbye”<\/em> and set off to eat lunch<\/strong> in town.<\/p>\n

    I was curious<\/strong> to learn what this “Dog Iron”<\/em> meant as I was not familiar with the\u00a0term.\u00a0The Web<\/strong> has become a fine and wonderful thing for research<\/strong>. It took me about 10 minutes<\/strong> but I discovered that Dog Iron<\/strong> is a synonym of “fire dog”<\/em> and andiron<\/strong>. When employed\u00a0that\u00a0way, it describes\u00a0the “lifts”<\/em>\u00a0used in fireplaces<\/strong> to keep the logs suspended<\/strong> for better airflow<\/strong>. Some are\u00a0also\u00a0designed<\/strong>\u00a0to prevent<\/strong>\u00a0the wood<\/strong> from rolling<\/strong> out into<\/strong> the room<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    A secondary<\/strong> meaning of Dog Iron<\/strong> is as a construction device<\/strong>\u00a0that holds logs or stones together<\/strong>. Which meaning Clement Rogers<\/strong> assigned to The Ranch<\/strong>, I do not know.<\/p>\n

Back in the day, airports were a very special thing. Even when I was young, people would dress up to fly on an airliner. Now, the majority\u00a0of\u00a0people<\/strong> in America don’t dress<\/strong> up for anything!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Having taken in the sights\u00a0at Dog Iron<\/strong>,\u00a0I put everything in order\u00a0for takeoff, started the motor<\/strong> and was about\u00a0to taxi<\/strong> to the runway when the two hombres<\/strong>\u00a0seen below came around the corner<\/strong>. I turned off<\/strong>\u00a0the fan and got out to talk to them for a minute. It was pretty windy at that point and I needed to be on my way but The Sky Surfer<\/strong> never misses a chance to address onlookers<\/strong>. Even though\u00a0I didn’t have time to\u00a0take out<\/strong> my earplugs or remove<\/strong> my ear muffs<\/strong> or goggles,<\/strong>\u00a0I stepped over to shake hands.<\/strong>\u00a0I gave them a couple of my “Sky Surfer” calling cards and said\u00a0I would perform a “maximum climb takeoff”<\/em> for their benefit.\u00a0They said, “That will be cool”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

    I included\u00a0two shots<\/strong> of them because they have\u00a0“All American Boy”<\/em> written all over them. They remind me of my Son Jack<\/strong> and his buddies<\/strong> when they were this age. I predict good fortune<\/strong> for them!<\/p>\n

    Thoughts On WWII<\/h4>\n

    It seems like there is no end<\/strong> to the interest in World War Two<\/strong>. Authors<\/strong> keep cranking out books<\/strong>. Movies<\/strong> continue to be made<\/strong>. In my life, I have read and watched thousands<\/strong> of stories<\/strong> and documentaries<\/strong>\u00a0about it. For me (as you might suspect)<\/em>, most have been about the Air War<\/strong>. I know it is not the same but when I chase deer or coyotes<\/strong> out on The Plains<\/strong>, I get a rough idea what it must be like for ground troops<\/strong> to be caught out in the open by attack aircraft<\/strong>. The advantage<\/strong> is decidedly in the warplane’s favor<\/strong>. Ground soldiers<\/strong>\u00a0are exposed<\/strong> to\u00a0aviators<\/strong>\u00a0even when trees<\/strong> and terrain shelter<\/strong> them from opposing\u00a0ground troops<\/strong> in the area. Of course\u00a0with the right equipment<\/strong> and training<\/strong>, ground fire<\/strong> can be quite effective<\/strong> against aircraft<\/strong>. Nevertheless, if I were in a war, I would definitely prefer being airborne<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    I had been flying for two hours<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0saw a nice meadow<\/strong>\u00a0so I dropped into it to take a break<\/strong> and shoot<\/strong> a few pix<\/strong> of the plane. They all turned out great<\/strong> but the one<\/strong> below\u00a0speaks the loudest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    In The Neighborhood<\/h4>\n

    Those of you who have read a few of The Sky Surfer’s stories<\/strong><\/a> are probably aware that Mulvane, Kansas<\/strong><\/a> is almost in the pattern of Surf’s home field Blue Sky Ranch & Aerodrome<\/strong><\/a>. So\u00a0by the time I took the Mulvane High School<\/strong> picture I was near the end of the journey. I looked over my head at the fuel tank and noticed I still had some gas left<\/strong> and decided to stay airborne<\/strong> 10 or 15 minutes longer. Combine that situation with an eye that never stops seeing “photo ops”<\/em><\/strong> and you get the next series of shots…<\/p>\n

    Providence Doesn’t Always Bring Happiness<\/h4>\n

    Sometimes The Truth Hurts.<\/strong>\u00a0When that happens, the best advice<\/strong> my Dad gave<\/strong> me is\u00a0“to grin and bear it”<\/em>. Here’s what I learned from the Sky Surfer Selfie<\/em>\u00a0taken\u00a0at the end of the Oologah Sky<\/strong>\u00a0Safari<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

    Prior to publishing this piece The Surfer<\/strong>\u00a0was thrilled<\/strong>\u00a0to open a\u00a0new purchase<\/strong> from The Sportsman’s Guide<\/strong><\/a>. When The Sky Surfer<\/strong> drops into a town, he is in the habit of carrying<\/strong> a number of items<\/strong> around with him – cameras, notepad, goggles, ear muffs, etc<\/em>. After about his first 10 Safaris,<\/strong>\u00a0it finally dawned on him<\/strong>\u00a0how excellent<\/strong> it would be not<\/strong> to have stuff cluttering<\/strong> his hands<\/strong> and hanging<\/strong> from his belt<\/strong> like a traveling peddler<\/strong> of old. He decided to get\u00a0one of those “belly bags”<\/em> he had seen. He found\u00a0one at Wal-Mart<\/strong><\/a> the previous\u00a0year<\/strong> and\u00a0put it into immediate use<\/strong>. He was quite impressed with himself<\/strong>. It worked great. Now his hands were free<\/strong> and he could easily pull stuff out of it while exploring. But… As you will see,\u00a0utility<\/strong> is not<\/strong>\u00a0always<\/strong> the most important\u00a0requirement<\/strong>….<\/p>\n

    Surfer<\/strong> had reasoned<\/strong>\u00a0that if\u00a0a medium size<\/strong> belly bag<\/strong> was good<\/strong>, an extra<\/strong>\u00a0large<\/strong>\u00a0one would be even better<\/strong>. Sportsman’s Guide<\/strong> had one and after patiently<\/strong> waiting some\u00a0days for delivery<\/strong>, he was able to pull it out of the UPS box with great joy<\/strong>. True to the catalog<\/strong>, it had loads of extra sections<\/strong> and pockets<\/strong> and was built\u00a0“mil-spec”<\/em> tough. Sky\u00a0bounded<\/strong> up the stairs of his beach house\u00a0to show his\u00a0Beautiful Wife Debra<\/strong>\u00a0this marvelous new piece of\u00a0Sky Surfing Attire<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Her lightning fast\u00a0response (combined with a “crinkled up nose” look of distain)<\/em> was, “What’s That?”<\/em><\/strong>. Every time Surf has\u00a0heard her use this phrase<\/strong>\u00a0in that manner,\u00a0it is<\/strong> not a good thing<\/strong>. Not convinced\u00a0they\u00a0were on\u00a0the same topic, he\u00a0pressed on<\/strong>. He\u00a0put the bag\u00a0around his\u00a0waist<\/strong>\u00a0to show her how it worked<\/strong> and how it would be used<\/strong>. He turned<\/strong> this way and that using his hands<\/strong>\u00a0and body language<\/strong> to demonstrate this fine piece of equipment<\/strong>. All\u00a0the persuasive\u00a0techniques<\/strong>\u00a0Surfer<\/strong> had seen employed<\/strong> by\u00a0the top\u00a0QVC<\/a> models and salesmen<\/strong>\u00a0were employed in force<\/strong>. All to no avail. Finally, all\u00a0the\u00a0wind came out of the\u00a0Surfer’s Salesman Sails<\/strong> with her final\u00a0pronouncement, “It makes you look like an old coot”<\/em>\u00a0(Frankly she probably\u00a0said “Old Dork”)<\/em>. The shock<\/strong> of the moment was so severe, Sky Surfer<\/strong> is still reeling<\/strong>.\u00a0To be exposed as\u00a0“looking bad”<\/em> – FOR\u00a0A YEAR – fried\u00a0all his\u00a0“mental self image”<\/em> circuit breakers.\u00a0Yikes!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Even in advancing years, The Sky Surfer<\/strong> is inordinately concerned<\/strong> about his appearance<\/strong>. The mere inkling<\/strong> of the remotest possibility\u00a0of The “C” Word<\/strong>, or worse<\/span>, The “D” Word<\/strong> being connected<\/strong> in any way with his vaunted\u00a0self image<\/strong>\u00a0caused a\u00a0micro-second-moment of\u00a0ego deflation<\/strong>\u00a0colossal enough to destroy\u00a0any lesser Super Hero<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Reaching deep <\/strong>with his last ounce<\/strong> of strength, The Sky Surfer<\/strong>\u00a0employed\u00a0the only device\u00a0in his arsenal<\/strong>\u00a0able to shield<\/strong>\u00a0himself\u00a0from this onslaught – Total Rejection<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0Even though Surf<\/strong> had learned decades earlier<\/span> to trust the sartorial choices Wife Debra made<\/strong> for him, in this case<\/span> she was obviously wrong<\/strong> about his beloved\u00a0belly bag<\/strong>. He knew<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0he\u00a0was on track<\/strong>.\u00a0She was obviously off her game<\/strong>. He\u00a0graciously thanked<\/strong> her for her<\/strong> (mistaken)<\/em> opinion<\/strong>\u00a0and confidently<\/strong> left the living room for his\u00a0home office<\/strong> with every intention<\/strong> of employing the new and improved<\/strong> belly bag<\/strong> for Sky Surfing Season 2015<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    That’s when Providence slapped him\u00a0upside the head<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Prior to\u00a0heading upstairs to model “the bag”<\/em> for Wife Debra<\/strong>, Surfer<\/strong>\u00a0had started a download<\/strong> at the\u00a0workstation<\/strong> containing\u00a0the pictures<\/strong> for this Oologah Report<\/strong>. As it would happen<\/em><\/span>, the closing\u00a0shot of the report (seen below)<\/em>\u00a0was dead center<\/strong>, fourteen inches wide<\/strong> on his<\/strong>\u00a0HD computer screen<\/strong>. YIKES!<\/strong> The brightly colored image<\/strong>\u00a0screamed in dissonant harmony<\/strong>,\u00a0“Coot AND<\/span> Dork!”<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Man<\/em>. The bag’s gotta go. The Sky Surfer<\/strong>\u00a0is now\u00a0seeking a backpack<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

    OK, so how come\u00a0Will Roger’s Wife<\/strong> never busted his chops\u00a0about wearing that goofy hat<\/strong>\u00a0in the famous picture<\/strong>\u00a0that opens this story?\u00a0Millions<\/strong> of people have seen him looking like that<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    On the other hand,\u00a0what if she did tell him<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0he<\/strong> wore it<\/strong> anyway?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Hmmm… I gotta think about that.<\/p>\n

    A Long Wait A\u00a0year prior\u00a0to\u00a0my Sky Safari to Oologah, Oklahoma, I read\u00a0an article discussing the annual Fly-In there. It\u00a0described\u00a0the huge\u00a0turnout for the event and that it had happened the weekend before I read\u00a0about it. So, I missed it – again. I had heard about\u00a0the Oologah Fly-In for years but always after it had occurred.
