Every Pilot A Weatherman<\/b><\/h4>\n

I know I bring up this “pilot\/weatherman”<\/em> comment\u00a0a lot but I can’t emphasize it enough. Kansas<\/b> has an interesting climate. About 3 years ago this region was enduring a severe dry spell (see the story “Intense!<\/a>“<\/b>). Temperatures that Summer<\/strong> were high. I believe we had an entire week over 100 degrees every day. Because of the heat jag,\u00a0there was much apocalyptic talk<\/strong>. Some were saying the farmers<\/strong> were going to have to move to low moisture crops. Others heralded a\u00a0return to The Dust Bowl Era<\/b><\/a>. Me, I didn’t buy all that fear mongering. I take the long view with regard to climate. I did some checking and while we are still considered to be in Drought Conditions<\/b><\/a>, it looks like we are trending\u00a0up on the equilibrium graph<\/strong>. That was certainly the case April through August of 2014…<\/p>\n

The Sky Surfer Was Grounded<\/b><\/h4>\n

Although an increase in my Advertising Business<\/b> had been a factor that Spring<\/b> and Summer<\/b>, the rainy conditions<\/b> were most to blame for keeping me grounded<\/strong>. While a different context for me than for a youngster, “being grounded”<\/i> produces a similar result – anxiety, discomfort and a longing to break the bonds of earth. Mr.\u00a0Surf<\/strong> saw\u00a0the potential of a flying season being washed away! This put him on edge and ready to risk getting\u00a0a little wet\u00a0rather than remaining\u00a0confined\u00a0to the ground.<\/p>\n

I have flown through light sprinkling rain<\/strong> many times. While it is not my favorite thing to do (it feels like being pelted by tiny BBs<\/a>)<\/i>, light sprinkling rain<\/span> typically does not last long in this area and you get through it pretty quick. Out here on The Great Plains<\/b>, when airborne, if\u00a0the visibility is good\u00a0you can see rain many miles away. Here is a photo<\/b><\/a> I took as part of a Sky Safari<\/b> to beautiful Eureka, Kansas<\/b><\/a> that makes an excellent illustration of this. In that case I was heading away from the downpour. If it\u00a0had been in my path,\u00a0I would have landed.<\/p>\n

Of more concern\u00a0than rain is lightning<\/b>. Whenever I see lightning<\/b> – even far, far away – I get on the ground. I have never heard of an Ultralight<\/b> being hit by lightning<\/b> but it sounds like bad mojo<\/strong> to me…<\/p>\n

A False Start<\/b><\/h4>\n

I had been monitoring different weather reports up to the Saturday<\/b> of the flight to Anthony, Kansas<\/b><\/a>. The pointers were indeterminate.\u00a0Friday night<\/b> I decided to head out early Saturday<\/b> morning and conduct a “visual”<\/em> at the field and\u00a0decide whether “to be or not to be”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In the shot above, the Sun<\/strong> is having no luck<\/strong> breaking through the dense cloud cover<\/strong>. At first glimpse\u00a0the sky looks\u00a0ominous<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

Light At The End Of The Tunnel<\/h4>\n

Looking Southwest<\/strong> in the direction of my goal (Anthony)<\/em>, it appeared\u00a0to be as forbidding as the weather\u00a0Northeast<\/strong>. What caught my attention, though, was\u00a0the “brightness breakthrough”<\/em> dead center<\/strong> in the picture at the horizon<\/strong>. That morning\u00a0the wind was coming directly from that spot. To me, that meant\u00a0better skies were on the way<\/strong>\u00a0. I decided I would get airborne and then from that better vantage point<\/strong> be able to see what things looked like “Anthony-wise”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Powwow<\/h4>\n

As I was contemplating the skies,\u00a0Paul White<\/strong> came around the corner on his 6-wheeler. Paul<\/strong>, originally from Texas<\/strong>, and his wife recently bought the Selby Stables<\/strong> and have renamed the property “Blue Sky Stables & Aerodrome<\/strong>“. He knows a lot about horses<\/strong> and intends to learn all he can about airplanes<\/strong>. Long before Paul<\/strong> bought the place he was reading The Flite Blog\u2122<\/strong> so he knows of The Sky Surfer’s journeys<\/strong>. When he first came around the building, I was out in the middle of the runway getting\u00a0a better view of the sky to the Southwest<\/strong>. I walked over to confer with him as to what he might know about the weather forecast<\/strong>.\u00a0Neither of us had heard any thunder<\/strong> and it had not rained<\/strong> since the middle of the night before. I told him it was my plan<\/strong> to get airborne so I could see better ahead<\/strong> and then\u00a0decide. He\u00a0agreed my plan was worth a try<\/strong>. I told him I might be\u00a0back soon<\/strong> or he wouldn’t\u00a0see me\u00a0until late afternoon<\/strong>.\u00a0He watched my take\u00a0off.<\/p>\n

At first the journey had possibilities. Although the ceiling was low, I could see into the distance and there was no rain.<\/p>\n

Heavy Rain Appears<\/p><\/div>\n

After\u00a0about 10 minutes,\u00a0rain began falling\u00a0in the distance. I turned around, returned to Blue Sky<\/strong> and landed. On the final stretch to\u00a0the field, light rain began to give me the “bb treatment”<\/em>. No sooner had I pulled the airplane into the hanger and a short downpour ensued<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Never Give Up<\/h4>\n

Even though the rain had scrubbed my initial foray<\/strong> I knew from the web\u00a0radar\u00a0it\u00a0would not last<\/strong>. I drove home to get some work done\u00a0in my home office, all the while checking\u00a0the radar on my computer to see how soon it would clear up. After a while I became focused on some\u00a0task and stopped checking\u00a0the weather. When I went upstairs for more coffee\u00a0I was delightfully surprised to see a sunny sky outside. I raced downstairs,\u00a0shut down the workstation,<\/strong>\u00a0jumped in the Mini<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and headed back to Blue Sky Aerodrome<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Quick Turnaround<\/h4>\n

Since the airplane was already pre-flighted, I just topped off the fuel tank and pulled it out. This time Blue Sky Aerodrome<\/strong> was represented by Paul’s Son<\/strong>\u00a0Corbin<\/strong>. He and his buddy saw me drive my Cooper<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0back to the hangar. By the time they hopped on\u00a0the 6-wheeler<\/strong>, I had the engine idling and was just about to step into the cockpit<\/strong>. I motioned to them to pose for the shot below, gave them the “thumbs up”<\/em>, hopped into the plane, taxied to the active and hit the skies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It is amazing what a couple of hours can make in the weather of Kansas<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

This was taken just after takeoff looking Southwest<\/strong> from 500′ AGL<\/strong>. No longer overcast, the winds are light.<\/p><\/div>\n

Hard To Hold<\/h4>\n

As in\u00a0a lot of places, water is a precious commodity in Kansas<\/strong>. Except for the floods in the Kansas City Area<\/a> over a decade ago, we welcome all the rain we get. The problem is holding on to it. Most of it joins the rivers and ends up in The Gulf of Mexico. There is a scheme to replenish the<\/strong> aquifer<\/strong><\/a> that the city of Wichita<\/strong> has undertaken but thus far the project doesn’t<\/strong> seem to be living up to expectations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The ground can’t hold all the newly fallen rain. This would not be a good\u00a0place for a forced landing…<\/p><\/div>\n

Enterprise On The Plains: A Cup Half Full Or Half Empty?<\/h4>\n

Below, the casual eye<\/strong> might only see an attractive pond in a bucolic setting. But as I said earlier, I remember this area three years ago in the middle of a burning drought<\/a>. At that time all the\u00a0ponds of this type were empty – dry<\/strong>. Farmers around the region made\u00a0the best\u00a0of a bad situation. While<\/strong> the ponds were dry<\/strong>, they brought out the bulldozers<\/strong> and tractors with blades<\/strong> and deepened\u00a0the ponds. Now, three years<\/strong> later, the rains have returned and the deepened ponds are holding\u00a0more water<\/strong> than before the drought<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I have passed this small sand dune area<\/strong> many times when flying Southwest<\/strong> of my home field. It is the only patch of sand for miles and makes quite a contrast to the\u00a0surroundings.<\/p><\/div>\n

Passing By Argonia, Kansas<\/h4>\n

Many times I stop at the Argonia Airport<\/strong>. From it I have walked over to the convenience store<\/strong> to get some gas or a drink. Argonia<\/strong> is featured in my movie “A Beginner’s Guide to Amateur High Power Rocketry”<\/em><\/a>. It is one of the few places in America<\/strong> where you can shoot a serious amateur rocket<\/strong> as it requires clearance for air traffic<\/strong> before high altitude rockets\u00a0can be launched. I have yet to do a full “Sky Safari Walkaround”<\/strong> of Argonia<\/strong> so maybe I will include that in my wanderings for next season…<\/p>\n

Oil Boom<\/h4>\n

Anthony<\/strong> has been in the middle<\/span> of an Oil Boom<\/strong> for the last three or four years<\/strong>\u00a0and that gave me the inspiration for the story title. I have\u00a03 times more photos of Oil Drilling Activity<\/strong>\u00a0from the flight but I figure you got the point. Also\u00a0consider that these are scenes from just the Northeastern Quadrant<\/strong> of the land around Anthony<\/strong>. This Drilling Boom<\/strong> is a 360 Degree<\/strong> situation for them.<\/p>\n

Kansas<\/strong> and Oklahoma<\/strong> have gone through Oil Boom and Bust Cycles<\/strong> for over\u00a0a hundred years<\/strong> now. This latest Boom<\/strong> has been fueled by new technologies<\/strong> such as horizontal drilling<\/strong> and fracking<\/strong>. It has brought a lot of money<\/strong> into the area.<\/p>\n

Cattle<\/strong> may be dumb<\/strong> but they’re not stupid<\/strong>. They know where to go on a hot August day<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Anthony From\u00a0Above<\/h4>\n

The Anthony Airport<\/a> is almost\u00a04 miles West<\/strong> of town. I was approaching from the Northeast<\/strong> and could have made a more direct entry to the airport but my SOP<\/strong> (Standard Operating Principle)<\/em> is to take\u00a0aerial photos of towns I visit before<\/span>\u00a0I land. The\u00a0theory<\/strong> is that the weather may change while I am touring a\u00a0town and result in\u00a0photo conditions that are\u00a0worse when I leave. It would be inexcusable to do a Sky<\/span> Safari Story<\/strong> of a town with out any “sky pictures”<\/em> of it. So here are a few pix of the town (I also took a few more when I left…)<\/em>. While\u00a0I was taking these pictures I was climbing to pattern altitude<\/strong> for entry to the airport. So note the angle changes during the photo sequence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Touchdown – Time To Look Around<\/h4>\n

Below you see the tie down area<\/strong> of the Anthony Airport<\/strong>. In the photo caption I used the word “tarmac”<\/em> with tongue in cheek because news reporters<\/strong> seem to be stuck on the term<\/strong> when writing about airports. Frankly, tarmac<\/strong><\/a> would be about the last thing<\/strong> you would want to taxi on as it refers to a mixture of tar and gravel<\/strong> smashed down by a steam roller. Introduced at the beginning of the 20th Century<\/strong>, it was a precursor to asphalt and prone to breakdown. While asphalt is OK, concrete<\/strong> is the best<\/strong> of all. For that reason I draw your attention to the surface<\/strong> below my plane<\/strong> at Anthony<\/strong> because it is one of the best small town airport runway and tie down\u00a0combinations<\/strong> around. Very nice! They are also kind enough to make a Courtesy Car<\/strong> available to pilots. Since the airport is 4 miles out of town, this\u00a0is huge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

(Oh, because I made such a big deal about it, the preferred term for the\u00a0spot shown below is “a ramp” or “an apron” – not a tarmac.)<\/em><\/p>\n

Parks, Memorials, Murals and Museums<\/h4>\n

Anthony<\/strong> has a wide variety of attractions. I could only visit a few because of the\u00a0limited ground time I have available on a Sky Safari<\/strong>. I had heard of the 911 Memorial<\/strong> built by the citizens of Anthony<\/strong>\u00a0so I made sure to visit it. As it would happen, I didn’t need to search. Just as I was entering town, I saw the Mural<\/strong>\u00a0shown below. Murals<\/strong> always get The Sky Surfer’s<\/strong><\/a> attention so I parked and walked through the park<\/strong> to take a picture of it. After\u00a0getting the picture, I was getting ready to leave<\/strong> when I looked through the trees toward\u00a0the East<\/strong> side of the park<\/strong> and spied what I realized must be the Memorial<\/strong> – it was.<\/p>\n

This is called “Destination Topolobampo”. It was painted to commemorate the beginning of the KCMO Railroad in the United States on 10 May 1902. This railroad connected Kansas City with Topolobampo, Mexico.<\/p><\/div>\n

Genuine Concern<\/h4>\n

The Memorial<\/strong> which is formally named “The Official State of Kansas 9-11 Memorial<\/a>“<\/strong>\u00a0represents quite an effort on the part of all involved. It has been built solidly to last<\/strong>. I have included some\u00a0photos of the Memorial<\/strong> and a shot of the\u00a0embossed salutation to provide you background. If you follow the link in the first sentence<\/strong> of this paragraph, you will learn even more about it. I would encourage everyone to visit<\/strong> it if you are in the area.<\/p>\n

America’s Farmers Feeding The World<\/p><\/div>\n

After coming out of the park<\/strong> I looked across the street to see one of what is typically\u00a0the largest edifice in a Kansas<\/strong> small town – Grain Elevators<\/strong>. This one features a huge<\/strong>\u00a0mural<\/strong> on the West<\/strong> side.<\/p>\n

Surfer Magnet<\/h4>\n

On the other side of Main Street<\/strong>, I saw one of my favorite things, a Museum<\/strong>. I usually don’t go to museums<\/strong> on my Safaris<\/strong> because I can get drawn into them and spend hours<\/strong>. As I said earlier, while I don’t have a strict timeline, my Sky Safaris<\/strong> take place in the span of one day<\/strong>. A good part of that is taken up\u00a0in the air. If I am going to get a good sense of a town I need to spend some time walking or driving through\u00a0it.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, this museum<\/strong> had some outside exhibits<\/strong> of early farm machinery<\/strong>. I figured, “What harm could it be to just take a quick look?”<\/em>. I drove across the street and parked the car at The Anthony Museum<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0The hook was set.<\/p>\n

The Anthony Museum<\/strong> is housed inside the former Santa Fe Railroad Station<\/strong> which was built in 1928<\/strong>. The museum<\/strong> took the premises over in 1984<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Outside Artifacts<\/h4>\n

While some might see rusty junk<\/strong>, I see marvelous physical history in old machinery<\/strong> like the items on display in Anthony<\/strong>. It is\u00a0commendable<\/strong> that the citizens of Anthony<\/strong> think enough about their heritage<\/strong> to keep it “alive”<\/em> for others to appreciate<\/strong> and learn from.<\/p>\n

All I can say is “Wow!”<\/em> – an actual Steam Tractor<\/strong>! You had to be a unique combination of mechanic<\/strong>, heavy equipment operator<\/strong> and dare devil<\/strong> to pilot<\/strong> one of these. I guess that’s what they call The\u00a0American Farmer<\/strong>… This is a 65 Horsepower Case Steam Tractor<\/strong>\u00a0donated by Smokey Billue<\/strong>, Bill Starks<\/strong> and David Spencer<\/strong> from the Estate Auction of Luther Henderson<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Personal Tour<\/h4>\n

As I walked in the door, Ruth Perry<\/strong>\u00a0the museum guide, was saying goodbye to a family that had just toured The Museum<\/strong>. I introduced myself and told her my mission. I asked if she could direct me to the high points of the collection because my time was limited<\/strong>. She tried her best to keep me focused<\/strong> but I was continually drawn to additional items. I have trimmed my photos down to the bare minimum<\/strong> for this report but I think\u00a0they give you an overview<\/strong> of this interesting place<\/strong>. And, Hey!\u00a0The Museum<\/strong>\u00a0is Air Conditioned<\/strong>, too. A fine respite from a witheringly hot day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Time To Hit The Town<\/h4>\n

Even though I was enjoying it, I knew I had to get moving so I could show you more of Anthony<\/strong>. I bid Ruth<\/strong> adieu,\u00a0thanked her for the personal tour of the Anthony Museum<\/strong> and set out to see what I would see.<\/p>\n

My Method Is No Method<\/h4>\n

Well, even though I say I don’t have a method when exploring a Sky Safari Town<\/strong>, I “kinda”<\/em> do. “Inspired serendipity<\/a>“<\/em> is its name. I thank God<\/strong> for my good vision (it used to be more like an Eagle’s but now it is at least\u00a0normal)<\/em>. With my eyes I scan the area and go to whatever looks interesting. You’ll find that old stone<\/strong> or brick buildings<\/strong>\u00a0draw The Sky Surfer<\/strong>. People<\/strong> and animals<\/strong>, too. Invariably as I head off toward something of interest, more shiny nuggets<\/strong> appear\u00a0in my path. I am never bored<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Inspiration\u00a0Takes Many Forms<\/h4>\n

I suspect\u00a0every town in America<\/strong> has a Main Street<\/strong>. Below\u00a0is a group of buildings on\u00a0Main’s South Side<\/strong>\u00a0in Anthony<\/strong>. I used to think naming a street “Main”<\/em> showed no creativity. That was until I read in The Bible<\/strong> that\u00a0God<\/strong> told Ananias<\/strong> to seek out a man from Tarsus<\/strong> called Saul<\/strong>. He told him Saul<\/strong>\u00a0was staying with a man named Judas<\/strong> on Straight Street<\/strong>. Genius<\/span>!<\/em> Upon reading that, I realized I had been missing the point all along. It is far more useful to name a street “descriptively”<\/em> than after a person<\/strong> or a flower<\/strong> or some arbitrary thing. By telling Ananias <\/strong>that Saul<\/strong> was on Straight Street<\/strong>, he would have no trouble finding him because obviously this was the only “straight street”<\/em> in the town. If\u00a0Ananias<\/strong>\u00a0was not familiar with it, he would know it when he saw it. The same goes for all Main Streets<\/strong>. Strangers<\/strong> visiting any small town<\/strong> will know where the businesses<\/strong> are located. At least there is a pretty good chance<\/strong> that’s where the action is…<\/p>\n

Serendipity +<\/h4>\n

Earlier I said my discovery method when visiting a new town is “serendipity”<\/em>. I need to qualify that. Usually I do some research prior to visiting a town. This can give me a “hook”<\/em> for the story but most of all<\/span>, it keeps me from looking too stupid.<\/p>\n

Example<\/strong>: “A Flight to Severy, Kansas<\/a>“<\/em>. Prior to that flight I was preoccupied with\u00a0camera mounts<\/strong> and other preparations for making a movie of the flight\u00a0that I did not<\/strong> take the requisite time to research<\/strong> the town. If I HAD<\/strong>, I wouldn’t have missed the attractive\u00a0Severy United Methodist Church<\/strong>.\u00a0There are hundreds of\u00a0large trees in Severy<\/strong> and the walking discovery path I took around town put them between me and the\u00a0building. So, I didn’t see it until I took off<\/strong> to leave the area. Duh.<\/p>\n

Harper County Seat<\/h4>\n

Anthony<\/strong> is the Harper County Seat<\/strong>. My research showed that in 1907 the folks built an impressive courthouse building. In the ensuing years it has been kept in excellent condition<\/strong>. I put it on a short list of things I must not miss<\/strong> on my journey.<\/p>\n

I love that there are so many trees<\/strong> in our towns and cities but from a photographer’s standpoint<\/strong>, they often get in the way. The trees in Anthony<\/strong> are very close to the main entrance<\/strong> of the Courthouse<\/strong> and make it impossible<\/strong> to get a complete view<\/strong> of the building.<\/p>\n

I can’t say I photographed every nice house\u00a0but here are a few that got my attention.<\/p>\n

I had just put gas in the Courtesy Car<\/strong> and was heading\u00a0to the airport<\/strong> when I saw one more mural<\/strong> in the rear view mirror. I swung a U-Turn<\/strong> and came back. Obviously for those who live in Kansas<\/strong>, the scene on the side of the Anthony Motel & Cafe<\/strong><\/a> is not a local landscape. Nonetheless I offer it to you.<\/p>\n

Not a mile West<\/strong> of town on Highway 44 \/ Main Street<\/strong> is Reflection Ridge<\/strong>. I could have cropped the photo\u00a0more but I wanted you to see the magnificent, natural tall grass prairie<\/strong> that surrounds the Conestoga.<\/strong>\u00a0It seems to bear\u00a0the settlers in the way\u00a0the Mayflower<\/strong>\u00a0brought earlier\u00a0generations across the Atlantic Ocean<\/strong>. I searched\u00a0the internet to find the artist<\/strong>\u00a0who conceived\u00a0this project but could not find him. Anyway, Nice Touch, Anthony<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

Gas Up And Go<\/h4>\n

Upon return to the airport my “mental camera”<\/em> spied the scene below. I parked the car and ran through the field to get to the right spot<\/strong> and snagged it. All the while I am hoping I don’t also snag a crop of chiggers<\/strong><\/a>… My problem is that when I am on a Sky Surfing Photo Mission<\/strong>, I will not allow<\/strong> myself the possibility of passing<\/strong> on a shot that I will even remotely<\/strong> later regret not having. It takes a little extra work but I know I did my best to cover the subject in the time allotted.<\/p>\n

An Official Sendoff (of sorts)<\/em><\/h4>\n

Most<\/strong> of the small town airports I visit have no fuel<\/strong> available on the field. I have to take empty gas containers<\/strong> I keep behind the seat into town and get them filled at a convenience store<\/strong> (gas stations are\u00a0becoming fewer, too…)<\/em>. The towns that DO have fuel on the airfield ask that you phone the police dispatcher<\/strong>\u00a0who sends\u00a0the police out to unlock the gas and take your money (see: Flight to Waynoka<\/strong><\/a>)<\/em>. That’s great and works fine. Another method is the self service\u00a0credit card<\/strong> approach that Anthony<\/strong> and a few other airports use.<\/p>\n

I had no sooner untied my airplane<\/strong> preparing to roll it over to the gas pump when I saw a substantial Ford SUV<\/strong> roll around the corner heading in my direction<\/strong>. Everywhere I go, people come out to see the bright yellow and orange bird\u00a0<\/strong>parked at their field s<\/strong>o it wasn’t unusual. This time it was Grant Sechler<\/strong>. He introduced himself and said he had seen me in town taking pictures and wondered if I was looking for a house<\/strong>. I told him that while I could think of few places more delightful to live it\u00a0was not my intent. Grant<\/strong> had recently retired from a long stint as Anthony City Superintendent<\/strong> and had lived in Anthony<\/strong> 65 years<\/strong> after moving there at the age of 3<\/strong> from Wakita<\/strong>. I told him I had been to Wakita<\/strong><\/a> once and that the story of the trip was on The Flite Blog\u2122<\/strong> just as the Anthony\u00a0Adventure<\/strong> would be as soon as I could get it written. I gave him one of my cards. Then after telling Grant<\/strong> what a fine airport the town has, my appreciation of The Courtesy Car<\/strong>\u00a0and how much I liked Anthony<\/strong>, I\u00a0bid farewell.<\/p>\n

A Return Flight Uneventful<\/h4>\n

An uneventful flight doesn’t mean a dull flight<\/strong>. It only means there was no mechanical<\/strong> or meteorological anomalies<\/strong> to “steal my joy”<\/em>. The temperature<\/strong> was a little over 90<\/strong> with a light wind from the Southwest<\/strong> that would give me a 5-8 mph boost back to Blue Sky Aerodrome<\/strong>. For much of the flight I stayed at 800 to 1,500 feet in order to take advantage of the tailwind<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Passing over these ovals<\/strong> in the ground, I realize this is the former Anthony Downs Horse Racing Track<\/strong><\/a> on the North side<\/strong> of town.<\/p><\/div>\n

Lots Of Lift<\/h4>\n

Once I turned Northeast<\/strong> from Anthony<\/strong>, I experienced exceptional lift<\/strong>. I call it “free air”<\/em> and always allow these\u00a0manifestations of the Sun’s\u00a0heat<\/strong> to carry me higher – with a limit. Below you see the view from about 1,500′ AGL<\/strong>. That’s about as high as I like to fly in my Quicksilver MXL<\/strong>. I have been as high as 7,500′ AGL<\/strong>\u00a0in my old MX<\/strong> but these planes don’t\u00a0fly very well that high. The engine is normally aspirated<\/strong> and loses power rapidly the higher you go. Also, the wings don’t lift as well at altitude.<\/p>\n

The three main things<\/strong> I don’t like about “flying high”<\/em> in my Quicksilver<\/strong>\u00a0are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. My slow airspeed makes it\u00a0seem like I’m standing still.<\/li>\n
  2. I can’t see details on the ground\u00a0or wave at people like I can at 300 to\u00a0500 feet.<\/li>\n
  3. I can’t see behind me.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    #3<\/strong> is the most significant issue because when you get over 3,000′ AGL<\/strong> you have the remote possibility of meeting\u00a0a fellow flyer traveling significantly faster<\/strong>. I can see traffic just fine for 270\u00b0<\/strong>\u00a0in front and below me but I’m blind directly behind the airplane and up<\/strong>. While I always have 3 strobe lights flashing<\/strong> when airborne, I prefer not to depend\u00a0that a guy in a jet overtaking me<\/strong> from behind is going to see me. Even the turbulence<\/strong> from a near miss can break a small plane apart. For an Ultralight it’s better to be down lower<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    In The Middle<\/h4>\n

    Because of the change in wind and lift we are fortunate<\/strong> to see this area from two flight level perspectives.<\/strong>\u00a0We saw some of these scenes earlier in the day from 50′ to 300′ AGL and now we can see them from much higher.<\/p>\n

    Soon after leaving Anthony<\/strong>, looking Southeast from 1700′ AGL<\/strong>, we see a new exploration<\/strong> bracketed by two completed<\/strong> ones.<\/p><\/div>\n

    Earlier that morning I passed this one at about 200′ AGL<\/strong> on the other side<\/strong>. This gives you a higher perspective<\/strong> from the Northwest<\/strong> at about 1,000′ AGL<\/strong> roughly a mile away.<\/p><\/div>\n

    Leaving The Patch<\/h4>\n

    While Kansas has\u00a0a fine mix of agriculture<\/strong>, oil<\/strong>, aviation<\/strong>\u00a0manufacturing<\/strong> and various entrepreneurial<\/strong> fast-food ventures<\/strong>, these things are not evenly dispersed. Soon I leave\u00a0the Oil Patch<\/strong> and am back over a predominantly agriculture area. There will be pump jacks<\/strong><\/a> seen frequently, though – The Farmer’s Friend<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
